Funny how you address everything except what you originally posted. Strug needed a score to win. Maybe she didn't need a "great" score, but she needed a good score to secure gold. She did this basically on one leg. I'm sure in that moment, Strug "felt the weight of the world" on her shoulders as well.

The very article you posted said that her vault was completely unnecessary. I'm sorry but she wasn't the addled Tony Larussa and I'm certain that the team and lifelong coaches knew the rules and how to score their events.

I never entered an event not knowing the score or what was needed. To suggest that she didn't as a person with a lifelong commitment to understand the sport is ridiculous.

Simply a case of some one who has dominated the competition her whole life finally have a screw up. She couldn't handle it. If she was a guy she would be getting torched like Paul George last year in the bubble.

See above. Yes, it was "unnecessary" but at the time she hurt her ankle, the Gold was not yet wrapped up. You were wrong.

I've never entered an event where my performance was judged by somebody else. At the time, she knew she needed a second vault and a good score to secure gold. Period.

"Marketing, pure marketing," I'm sure has nothing to do with Biles's actions today, right?

While part of me understands the pressure getting to someone how do you work for something your whole life get to what is your ultimate goal and then quit on yourself your team and your country? Isn't that something you will always regret later no matter how you feel in the moment? She will never know the results. Why are people not accepting the joy or success they have? My father would have been calling me telling me to get my ass out there and he'd love me no matter what the result is but I'd have to try. Not trying is the ultimate failure to him. Not to mention letting others down. It's so weird.

 The most experienced coach and an entire team didn't know? Once the cheerleading and jingoism stopped most commentators openly talked about it.

Marketing, pure marketing. Almost as bad as with FloJo eight years earlier.

They didn’t know because Russia still had a chance to beat them. Russia had another event after Strug’s 2nd vault and mathematically could have edged the US (if they did well and the US was stuck with Strug’s first vault). I don’t know that the pedo running US gymnastics at the time could predict the future.

Strug’s 2nd vault locked it up mathematically; then the communist shat the bed, making the points from the 2nd vault retroactively unnecessary.

Pure wrong iirc. The article effectively confirms that . Hers was the last vault of the night. But since it was remarked on, let's be clear, I didn't bring up Kerri Strug.

The girl did a high pressure vault with a ruptured ankle because her coach told her it was necessary. It’s an insane display of physical toughness.

Yet it’s hand waved as marketing because apparently bela karolyi could predict the future.

"Hey, we will win gold by letting the Russian's fail," is a terrific marketing strategy, eh?

If her team is supportive, who gives a damn about how a bunch of irrelevant people feel. Especially when they've been proudly proclaiming how much they don't care about the entire event?

And frankly, if this helps prevent her going Barret Robbins or Dave Duerson in retirement, good for her. Fuck the arm chair analysts who never really did dick in that forum.

The Russians had already finished. Maybe they were too stupid to check the score? Or was it more likely a marketing ploy? The Karolyi's had been aces at that since 76.

Oh ok so she represents America and we should all be extremely proud of her when she does well. But when she bitches out and quits that's all out the window and she's only in it for herself and her teammates.

Right.

The Russian's finished the vault. The entire Russian team was not done yet. You were, and still are, wrong.

The most likely marketing ploy is what Simon Biles did earlier today in Japan. And if her issues are as severe as Duerson or Robbins, she should be back home getting the help she needs.

No. Grown assed men and women shouldn't be wrapped up and needy for a teenaged or young adult to validate each other's sporting enjoyment. No one is saying be proud when she wins, you have nothing to do with it. Just appreciate that. And maybe reevaluate your life.

Did you read the article you posted? After the first 2-3 times it noted it was unnecessary, and remembering the reporting when the nation's glee died down it was well settled.

That's my original point. MANY bitching about this early are the exact same people who've been proclaiming that for months. I've never said they don't matter, actually the opposite. But lining up to revel in certain teams' shortcomings is very telling. I'd never cheer against USA hockey, golf, swimming or skiing, but MANY here would be apoplectic if I followed their lead over the last couple of weeks.

IIRC......your original point was that you would pay to rent a gym to watch us flail around, and then you ended up being wrong about Strugg and the '96 Olympics several times over.

Well look man, Simone Biles got her spot on the roster at the expense of somebody else who probably put in his as much (if not more over the last four years) time as Biles did. You and I don't know that person's name probably, but they are certainly out there.

For Biles to just bathe in all the adulation, money and fame then quit because "loldontfeellikeit" is bullshit. Its stupid. If this was what she was going to do at the Olympics they should've sent somebody else who at least had the intention of competing.

There is no way her team is supportive of this even if they say they are publicly. I don't think I could be as a parent nor could I live with myself. The olympics mostly suck I get burned out on them easily. I guess I like a few events and it does have it's moments. I remember some successes and some failures as the best moments. Derek Redmond is my all time favorite olympic moment. This is neither, it's bizarre. She's just giving up, all that work, all that sacrifice, all the great moments she's had seemingly for nothing. I can't see how that's good for mental health but whatever. People can convince themselves of a lot of things.

I don't really understand the parallel you are drawing with Robbins or Duerson. Everybody's story and situation is different, I'm not sure their issues apply here.

Like Rob Base we all have a little joy and pain but I think what makes us human and better off is sharing that. I don't see how this is a good decision for her or her mental health. The worst that happens is she fails and maybe that's what she's afraid of but not knowing seems worse. Nobody will really care if she fails but they will remember this and most probably not fondly. Wouldn't that be worse?

It is her version of Pippen's Migrane.

No, my original point was that I hope she's ok. I'd still pay to see any of her detractors here try a third of what she does under the bright lights and her 15 years of intense training and scrutiny. But MANY of her detractors here can cluck cluck from the sidelines of the best jv sidelines they ever warmed benches on.

And again, 96 was done before the last vault. Your article said that much. There wasn't the possibility of a Russian comeback.

The fact that she did those things in other events just makes this deal even more crazy.

There wasn't a possibility only because Strugg attempted a second vault on one leg and scored high enough to mathematically eliminate the Russians from the gold!

Cluck Cluck.

Not reading what is most assuredly a shit show thread.

I think the most fair perspective on this would have to be Simone Biles definitely let her team down, but mental health is a serious topic.

I think that is a valid tweet if Biles goes home and doesn't compete any more in the Olympics this year.

Otherwise, it was that she didn't think she was going to perform well today and dropped out.

That's what makes it odd though. All that and then just give up. I'm not really one of the people flaming her for it but there isn't anything extraordinarily heroic about this moment for her either, I find it very sad. I hope it's something she doesn't live to regret and I don't think it's something that should be built up.
