We've changed the definition of mental health to cover everything from feeling pressure during athletics to not wanting to show up at press conferences. Not only should you not do what you promise, you should be praised and rewarded for it because "mental health."

these elite athletes who are tired of the mental strain of competing on a huge stage should band together and create more casual leagues informal leagues where they can compete against each other but for low stakes... not on TV and no press allowed, could be at night after work or on weekends... could organize it based on age and ref the games themselves.... i wonder if that type of league exists?

Great idea! I'm calling my buddy who owns a bar in Wicker Park and suggesting he install a pommel horse and some uneven bars in his beer garden.

We as sports fans applaud great performances in high pressure moments- the athlete who plays sick or hurt like Jordan against the Jazz or the fake bleeding Schilling. We cheer big shots with the basketball game on the line or a closer that finishes the game with elite pitches. We also recognize the mental toughness of players under grueling circumstances. And these players are lauded for that.

In the same way, when the opposite occurs- a player cannot suit up for the game due to a nagging injury or illness, misses a key shot, walks the batter with the bases loaded, etc, they take withering criticism by fans and in the media.

I am not sure while mental issues are any different. It is sad, but no more so than player who has chronic knee or back pain. Frankly, much of what we consider mental health problems is really just regular old human problems- depression and the like. Playing “through it” is heroic. Sitting out is understandable but still subject to criticism like all other parts of an athlete’s game.

I think mental health is no longer a taboo subject, and I'm glad players and athletes seem to be getting the help they need. And that said help seems to be readily available.

The ongoing praise for somebody that dropped out during the middle of the highest level of competition is very confusing.

Some big corporations with great pr departments have invested a lot of money into Biles being their representative. They quickly came up with a strategy to sell bad as good and it has swayed a portion of their consumers

Number one Jay Cutler wasn't taking the same risks as her. Quarterbacks are coddled. What she does requires more toughness.
Two, I doubt that he had dealt with sexual abuse and been the face of cleaning up a sport.
Third, it's funny that you'd think that I cared, I'm not a Bears fan.
Finally (& I just heard this pointed out) I don't remember the same scorn heaped on Jordan when he abruptly quit in 93 right before camp.

Something I hadn’t thought of that Mikayla Maroney brought up is that if screw up in gymnastics, you can be paralyzed or worse. If you’re mentally off in most sports you would just lose the event or game, but not be seriously injured.

I think it comes down to whether her teammates are cool with it or not. There is no way to know for sure unless you speak with them off the record. I doubt that any of them would ever go on the record. She doesn't owe anyone else an explanation however. Maybe her sponsors but they can drop her if they want .
