Im pretty sure that during her life in the spotlight that if she's so mentally fragile she has to quit after one subpar performance it probably woudve been mentioned at some point but sure point taken, observation withdrawn

how does such a mentally weak woman obtain notoriety (for like a month every 4 years) and Subway sandwich commercials while tough guy like yourself is stuck posting on a message board amirite???

life is so unfair

This was funny.

Half of you questioning Simone Biles’ “toughness” can’t even wear a mask for five minutes in Starbucks. Have a seat.

All these people who pretend to know so much about toughness are a bunch of pussies who cant go to fucking Starbucks without wearing a mask over their face.

One thing you never do is talk bad about the masks. These pussies get really upset about it. That little piece of cloth might as well be a holy relic in their eyes.

Not really.

The people have walked around without a mask pre and post vaccination available , risking catching such a deadly disease as Covid are the ones who arent "tough" ? Its a poor analogy of tough regardless.

They would die for their masks. Its beyond fashion accessory, they love it more than they love their families. Its crazy.

He is talking about the people who complained about the inconvenience of wearing a mask that criticized Biles for a lack of "toughness"

Wearing a mask to protect yourself as well as another person isn't a sign of weakness. To question her toughness after complaining about the inconvenience of having to wear a mask is a sign of weakness.

Oh. Well maybe its a mental health issue with the people not wearing them.

You're so weak you wear a muzzle like a fucking dog just because your corrupt government tells you too. Yet you feel entitled to lecture everyone else about toughness.

Get lost burrito.

i don't agree with that at all; everyone has anxiety, not everybody is mentally ill. it's about handling your anxiety that makes the difference.

i can't get inside the mind of simone biles; the eye test in the video showed me nothing more than quitting. she didn't like how she landed, and said to her teammates she was done. that's how it looked. if there is more to the story, it's her story to tell.

however, the media playing this parent/teacher coddling angle is more dangerous than what people's armchair opinions are. athletes, like any other public profession, are going to be in the spotlight for criticism and for praise. you don't need to be a part of that spotlight to understand there is a price to pay for the fame. that's been known since the entertainment industry began.

someone mentioned hating on the USWNT earlier in the thread--i actually liked what rapinoe said after the loss to sweden. she wanted to see the criticism. she put it on herself, and it gave her the drive to win. that's what an elite mind does when they face adversity. like venus williams said about pressers: "i'm better than you, so have at it." you have to strengthen that part of your mental game, because it's part of life.

trying to cherry pick through life will only hurt your mental health, because you'll never be able to let anything go, or roll off your back.

i know from personal experience that criticism built me up better than praise did.

Criticism is fine but she is getting both extremes which I don't think she deserves. She is neither a coward or a hero.

You brag about carrying a pistol even though you purposefully place yourself in areas where you have a greater likelihood of being shot by a coyote than you do a human and you are going to lecture someone about toughness!.

Soft ass!

Like I said, I don't really care about this, but I do find the "lost in the air" thing interesting. I get that that could be terrifying. But it's hard to believe that it's never previously happened to a gymnast with as much experience as she has. Did she just "lose the edge" like Cougar in Top Gun? I could understand that.

I really don't know this sport, but reading between the lines I'm kind of getting the idea that she may be past her prime and she got her spot on the team based on past performance and who she is. But listening to the media prior to the games I got the impression she was better than ever. Can someone who knows the game tell me what's true?

I think it has mostly to do her willingness to discuss her mental health issues. There has always been a fear to discuss it.

I wouldn't begrudge her bravery with mental health issues or being a survivor of sexual assault. That's not really what is being discussed or questioned though. Her quitting in the middle of the olympics is not an act of heroism no matter the reason and especially if she did choke which I wouldn't blame her for but wouldn't hold it up as an act of bravery if that makes sense. It's fine to crack under pressure.

If they are hailing her for bailing that's wrong. I honestly don't think the majority are doing that however. I'm sure there are some who are though but not the majority.

It’s probably a slight distinction: they’re praising her for her bravery in focusing on herself. The bailing was secondary to that.

Edit: just saw Spaulding’s post.

I guess there is something relative to what she is going through which afflicts gymnasts called the "Twisties"

Quote:
The ‘twisties’
It is mysterious what contributes to an talented athlete suddenly losing their ability, like a golfer who keeps shanking the ball. Gymnasts call it “the twisties,” slang for “her mind was stopping her physically from doing what she could normally do,” Louise Radnofsky and Andrew Beaton explain in the Wall Street Journal. It’s not just frustrating, it’s dangerous. “If a gymnast’s ankle isn’t working right, or her head is in the wrong place, and she flips at speed and it doesn’t work out, she can die.”
And importantly, “Biles could not just snap out of it.”

Wow. We almost lost Simone Biles and Bob Odenkirk in about 36 hours.
