You have to remove yourself from the equation. I've been told the same thing a million times in my life. Especially being with someone who works in the mental health field. Anxiety, depression and MANY other issues that will all deal with at times in our lives just don't affect us all the same way. There is no "magic" solution that makes everyone better. In a different environment praise and positive reinforcement could have led to you being just as good of a person as you are today.

I didn't see the video and I have no interest in looking at it. I just saw kinda looked at the last 2 pages around mental health and commented. I'll take your word that she simply quit.

i understand that and agree with that; i was just disagreeing that having anxiety means you have a mental illness. and you're right, there is no magic solution. and a lot of therapists out there could try and understand that instead of being bookish about their approach. it takes empathy and understanding to get to the root of the issues. i've dealt with it in my life as well, extensively when i was young, and it'll always be there.

of course praise is also important; i'm just saying that criticism has done more for me because it stokes the flames, and keeps me driven. it doesn't work that way for everyone, but you have to at least accept that you're going to get it from time to time. and sometimes it's mean, and unwarranted. when you know yourself well enough, you'll know what to listen to and what to tune out.

How's this for criticism? Um...you stink. How do like that criticism? You know what's funny to me? That diploma up on the wall. That is my idea of "com-med-dee"! You sitting here, telling people what to do!

Yeah, but the Twisties can kill you. Biles is lucky to be alive.

I think I read somewhere that she has ADHD and takes Adderall.

I think Adderall is illegal in Japan.

Could this be the issue? Now granted, one could safely argue that this would've been known going in and other options would've been floated or perhaps a waiver extended in this situation, but...

If Duncan Keith could go out on the ice, skate 30 minutes a night, and win a Conn Smythe and Stanley Cup while teammate Patrick Sharp was banging his wife, then I don't give a shit what Simone Biles' excuse is. If you're mentally weak, then maybe you aren't a great athlete as mental toughness is part of being a top athlete.

That was nice of Clare to say so. Plus it didn't sound like an empty compliment. I think she was absolutely sincere.

Not really.

Yeah, really.

This whole Biles thing is a perfect microcosm of society currently. A bunch of underdeveloped assholes from both sides spouting off in to the internet about how tough their side is.

Get lost burrito.

I don't feel entitled to lecture anyone about toughness, havent worn a mask in months and only when it was necessary to grocery shop and shit like that, and still think you're not really qualified to talk about toughness.

It should have been enough to say "she had a mental condition that you cannot abide in gymnastics lest you break your neck, she had to withdraw, it's heartbreaking" and leave it at that. Unfortunately, because she's a black woman and thus they always had it in for her anyway, conservatives had to start tearing into her and comparing her situation with their own courageous intramural exploits or whatever. And then, to make matters even worse, the intellectually bankrupt cultural liberals who can provide nothing but an equal and opposite reaction to the right had to pop in and say "no, this makes her her even more heroic than if she had won, this is the greatest thing anyone has ever done, she's doing Black Girl Magic and she doesn't owe any of you people anything," which is not only extremely patronizing but completely insane.

But part of me thinks this is priming the pump for a culture war that goes beyond our domestic one. Tell me: do you think the Russian or Chinese people would applaud a Russian or Chinese athlete for "not owing anyone anything"? Never. And that's why we're better than they are, right?

What does this even mean? We should be more like China and Russia? Why do you care? We've been fighting the same culture wars for over 100 years. They are as American as apple pie. It won't likely change until My great grandkids and Seacrest's great grandkids and have a million babies together.

It means we’re weak and in the twilight of the empire. And whether her mental issues are evidence or not, the broader point is true.

We’re rotting from the inside out.

We used to project strength. Even in adversity.

Now we celebrate weakness.

Si señor. We were scrappy underdogs (irrespective of how ridiculous that could be).

Now we celebrate quitting. We’ve skipped past understanding mental issues to celebrating them.

We’ll be fine. Both the far left and far right of this country are brain poisoned but most people dislike both groups. Just gotta get through this valley and we’ll see another peak.

The frustrating thing about Jacobin being like "we must show solidarity with our comrade Simone Biles" is that there never ends up being any solidarity. #MeToo was supposed to usher in a new era of working-class women standing up to abuse; instead, the working-class women keep getting abused but now blogresses can put Drew Magary's friend in a Google Docs spreadsheet for being rude and end his career. Will Simone Biles looking out for herself by refusing to break her neck embolden other workers to stand up for their physical safety and their mental health in the workplace? or will it lead to more athletes scratching themselves from games because they feel sad while Amazon still makes you piss in a bottle?

So we should sound tough while losing? Humiliate an American athlete until they kill themselves? Possibly kill the athlete ourselves like Russia or China might do?

I'm not going to celebrate quitting in the Olympics, but I've had more than enough of the fake toughness to last a lifetime. We have a bunch of mentally fragile people here and elsewhere demanding that others do what they wouldn't do.
