i understand that and agree with that; i was just disagreeing that having anxiety means you have a mental illness. and you're right, there is no magic solution. and a lot of therapists out there could try and understand that instead of being bookish about their approach. it takes empathy and understanding to get to the root of the issues. i've dealt with it in my life as well, extensively when i was young, and it'll always be there.

of course praise is also important; i'm just saying that criticism has done more for me because it stokes the flames, and keeps me driven. it doesn't work that way for everyone, but you have to at least accept that you're going to get it from time to time. and sometimes it's mean, and unwarranted. when you know yourself well enough, you'll know what to listen to and what to tune out.

It should have been enough to say "she had a mental condition that you cannot abide in gymnastics lest you break your neck, she had to withdraw, it's heartbreaking" and leave it at that. And then, to make matters even worse, the intellectually bankrupt cultural liberals who can provide nothing but an equal and opposite reaction to the right had to pop in and say "no, this makes her her even more heroic than if she had won, this is the greatest thing anyone has ever done, she's doing Black Girl Magic and she doesn't owe any of you people anything," which is not only extremely patronizing but completely insane.

But part of me thinks this is priming the pump for a culture war that goes beyond our domestic one. Tell me: do you think the Russian or Chinese people would applaud a Russian or Chinese athlete for "not owing anyone anything"? Never. And that's why we're better than they are, right?

The frustrating thing about Jacobin being like "we must show solidarity with our comrade Simone Biles" is that there never ends up being any solidarity. #MeToo was supposed to usher in a new era of working-class women standing up to abuse; instead, the working-class women keep getting abused but now blogresses can put Drew Magary's friend in a Google Docs spreadsheet for being rude and end his career.
