I know a few families that are very much that way. I honestly think it’s generational.

Every time my Dad threw my door open at 5am to walk beans because by 11am it would be too hot to continue I knew he was secretly saying I love you.

 Mine was when he made me clean up things that hadn't been cleaned in years.

The incinerator with an aggressive rat was especially touching.

When I didn’t have to walk the 1/4 mike to get the Sunday paper in January it was my dad showing his love. His love of donuts because he was going to get those and would grab the paper for me.

My favorite Dad saying was when he’d get me up at 7am and I was dead tired, he’d say “half the day is over. I’ve already been to town (20 minutes away), had a cup of coffee, and got the paper.”

My dad had been in the hospital the last couple of days. I know this is brag about, but hear me out.

He had a CAT scan, and MRI, and several other tests because they thought he may have had a stroke or a mini stroke. Again, I know this is a brag about thread.

DR came into the room today when I happen to be there along with my mom.
"If somebody just handed me these films, I never would have guessed these were the carotid arteries of a 70 year old diabetic. He looks like he is 40 and healthy."

"Would you be willing to talk to my brother? He has diabetes as well, and you have yours completely in check, and I think you could give him some good advice."

"Your blood work and cholesterol work up overall is better than mine."

He has vertigo. Which sucks but things could be so much worse.

Yeah that was the hardest thing. Explaining to my kids that Papa was gone to heaven.

I was told that grandma went to the other place when she died.
In fact at her wake, a neighbor walked over to talk to me. He said "I told that woman that the next time put my eyes on her it would only be if she was in a casket. Well here she is and here I am. I needed to make sure she was really dead."

True story. How be became so bitter toward her, and how he became known as Lefty, are the same story, apparently.

None of the farmers from my wife's family, or from my mom's family for sure.

It's never too late Doc to start telling your sons that you love them.

Start today, you won't be sorry that you did.

How much did it matter to you not hearing "I love you"?

It didn't at the time, but then when it started when I was older I was really uncomfortable with it. That went away after a while, but it was there. I'd imagine if I'd heard it more it wouldn't have made me uncomfortable.

I hear it all the time from my generation that is farming when they talk to their little kids. It is rare in the over 60 sect.

I probably had an un natural fear of my father. Not that he would lay a hand on me, hell he would t even tell, but that id get the cold, distant treatment thst he was prone to give. I wonder if I felt more stable and secure with the man, more outwardly loved, thst when shit got difficult for me I wasn’t so concerned about disappointing them man that I didn’t trust and seek his help. Would an “I love you son.” Had made a difference? I’m not sure but I think it would of been a positive impact at the time. In retrospect it’s easy to see the way he loved his teenage sons but man… my brother and I sure didn’t see it at the time.

I spent some days on the farm each summer as a kid down near Dwight, west of I-55. All of my relatives were past 70 by then. I don't ever remember hearing it once from my aunt's and uncles.

My wife's family owns 500 acres east of I-55 to this day. They are not the I love you types at all either. Some tough old Germans they are.

My mother in law learned to say it when our kids came along. My wife was her only daughter and favorite child. Our kids could do no wrong in her eyes, and they felt the same way about her.

Didn’t bother me at all. In fact, it would have been more uncomfortable to hear it.

We weren’t emotional people.

That seems like a common thread around here. I guess truly a generational thing.

My oldest daughter and her husband have been having some fertility issues. They had been to a few different doctors discussing some options. The doctors believed her tubes were blocked and that was the cause of her issues. There is a surgery that can attempt to unblock the tubes. Her insurance would not cover this surgery, but they decided to go ahead with it. The day before she was to go to St Louis for this surgery she found out from the pre surgery blood work that she is pregnant. So move over grandpa rossy, grandpa rfdc is coming to town!
