Hey easy pal. Humiliate an athlete? Of course not.

You said it. Don't celebrate quitting. That's it. Call it what it is.

And yes. Project strength even if you lose.

Iirc Magary played a role in burying his former friend. Lost respect for him after that, stopped following him and his work.

This whole Biles thread is honestly insane. It’s absolutely wild to me how critical people can be of her after all the medals she won.

It reminds me of that scene in He Got Game where Denzel is telling his son “what you perfect? You out here shooting and never miss any shots?”

I agree the praise for her bravery is obnoxious but that doesn’t mean you need to be equally obnoxious in your criticism of her. She is and will always be an Olympic hero for us.

There's this crazy notion that the "discourse" on the internet is some deeply held secret that seldom bleeds over to the real world. That "most people", especially those with enough money/fame to not give a fuck, don't burden themselves with trivial internet shitfights. Maybe twenty (in some ways even ten) years ago that was true, but today it is no longer.

Simone Biles deliberately put herself in the culture war because that validation you get from both the feverish devotion on Your Side and the frothing animosity from the Other Side has turned out to be for many, many people better than money. Better than fame. Better than anything, that dopamine hit is overwhelming.

Its very easy for an athlete to remain out of the fray. Apolitical and boring. She didn't, don't act like anything she did was motivated by truth or what she actually felt. She's grifting.

He either actively did or did nothing to help. He's a true piece of shit, a guy who made his name doing everything the enlightened media class condemns but can slide away from it because he went to good schools. Garbage.

i agree. she did enough to warrant some leeway. wasnt she also a nassar victim? for me, that would be enough to end it all right there. she won all those medals under horrible circumstances. kinda dumb to say shes weak because she quit under good circumstances... doesnt really matter, she doesnt need to prove anything.

No doubt. She’s been through more than almost any of us and accomplished more than any of us on this board. Just ridiculous the people in this thread calling her a loser and coward.

I don’t give a shit about the olympics at all. But yeah it’s funny to see people act like they were personally let down by her being anything less than perfect.

Well, online discourse is VASTLY different from normal in person discourse. I don’t think that can be denied so not sure your point on that front.

What did she do that was political? Genuinely asking, I don’t follow all this shit. Was it simply quitting an event she didn’t feel well enough to compete in?

This ain't about the Olympics and it aint even about Simone Biles. The mentality has gone from "when the going gets tough, the tough get going" to "something something mental health I quit later", which we all know is bullshit and we all know is a recipe for disaster. The fact people have to line up around the block to say "uhh ackshually..." and justify it only speaks to how profoundly unnatural it is.

There’s nothing to justify. She couldn’t go, she couldn’t go. She already proved her chops on the highest stage.

But you’re right this isn’t about Biles. It’s just another dumb bizarre culture war for no reason.

There can be a middle ground between a quitter and a hero. The subsequent withdrawal from future competitions shows that.

She’s already a hero. This wasn’t her first olympics. If it was that would be a different discussion. There’s no middle ground needed here. No praise should be given for her decision to withdraw but no criticism should be given either. It’s really that simple. There’s no debate here

But I know many folks here are so politically diseased as for it to be a mental illness so of course this thread is 12 pages when it’s really a non story.

Can we all at least agree that the media narrative that her quitting is heroic and to be celebrated is a joke?

The dominant media narrative was quitting the Olympics was more important that competing and winning because it would inspire conversations. If she didn't want to compete retire. If she can't perform because of the pressure that's not "mental health".

That may be the most dismissive take on women’s gymnastics I’ve ever read.

Leaning into mental health was the best way for her and NBC to save face after it was touted for MANY months that she was the GOAT. Can't have it be no story at all, there's fucking airtime to fill.

Simone Biles is yesterday's news.

Absolutely, no question. Stupid, reactionary, irresponsible, and probably motivated by money just as much as owning the chuds.
