Very odd that they have not put him on IR and get whatever the situation is taken care of, by bringing in Peters they pretty much admit they do not have him in the plans at either tackle position this year.

It would seem they have MRI data indicating something more is going on, back tightness may likely be due to a disc issue which could limit or end his career. If he was drafted with a known disc issue that would be a monumental waste of draft capital.

I thought we were past the days of drafting injured players who were falling in the draft because of red flags and so, presented "good value".

It was always risky to pen him in at LT as a rookie on Day 1 even though he had never played the position.

This is a real pace fuck up. He had a nice draft but the rest of his off season was an incoherent mess.

It would be interesting to see what information the Bears had. They didn't do the drills but they still did the medicals at the combine.

Their information had to be inferior given that they not only drafted him, they both removed all possible impediments to him starting at LT from Day 1 and chose not to sign anyone who could be considered a challenger (despite low cost veterans being on the market).

I see this recent Peters signing as an admission that this back issue is serious.

Pre-draft I heard the back injury was a pulled muscle. It kind of looks like another pulled muscle since he's been seen on the bike and off to the side. If that's the case it might be something they can manage after it heals then find the root cause of why its happening and take care of it in the offseason. In my case it was scar tissue in my lower back. I haven't had an issue since it was removed.

It was such an unnecessary move to trade up for him. They could have stood pat and took a tackle like Radunz.

Nah, the Bears kicked off a huge run on tackles and I think they really got the best one on the board. People willing to stick a fork in this over some camp back tightness need to take a step off the ledge.

They were overeager to pencil him in as the left tackle of the future but I still expect a nice career on the right side out of him. I would still rather have him than any other tackle drafted after him except Sam Cosmi.

I agree.
RT and LT have been a problem. I fully didn't expect Jenkins to start out the gate as a pro bowler, but we know the Massie and the other clown were bad. I'd rather watch a rookie struggle than a veteran who we already know is bad be just that.

and there it is

That is simply unacceptable scouting by Pace.

It appears all other teams knew about this problem. I'd like to believe Pace did as well but deemed the risk worthy of the reward in the second round. I don't believe that but I'd like to believe.

He's not playing this year. Awful draft pick, but I called it on draft day.

This was a move by a GM who :

1. Does not value picks.
2. Is not concerned about a player's health if he's a guy he wants
3. Must have some amazing job status

They must have had MRI results a while ago?

Usually try to avoid surgery at all costs for someone this young, so must be fairly significant disc issue, you can go back to work fairly soon if your an office worker, but pretty extensive and questionable outcome if you hope to be an NFL offensive lineman.

Supposedly this is a NEW back injury. He had a lumbar strain last year.

Four playoff wins in the last 30 years. You can not be surprised by this.

any word on the recovery time?

I would think he goes on PUP with a hopeful return after week 6. Still, this is a guy who was moving positions and hasn't had any training. It's not like he comes back and you can automatically call him a starter even at RT.

I'll save you the time. He's 100% not playing this year.

I’d just use my superior reach to knock his nerd glasses off his head. He’d likely injure his back trying to pick them up and that’s a win for ol’ Antioch.

Don Mosebar had back surgery on draft day (without Al Davis' knowledge) and went on to a 13 year near HOF career. It was an eye injury that eventually forced him to retire. You don't like to see it but its not necessarily the end of the world.
