Same here. I loved boardwalk Empire. Not sure about The Wire. I saw a few episodes and hated the characters for some reason. Maybe I should give it another try.

I can see that. If you watch him as Chalky White and then see him as Omar, it's sort of messes with you. 2 completely different characters. Omar is like a Batman character almost. While Chalky is more realistic for that era.

BTW.....first 2 seasons of Boardwalk were awesome. In a rare occurrence, season 2 was better than season 1. But after season 2 I dont really remember that many memorable storylines. I did like the one season where Bobby Cannavale was part of the cast but that was a so-so season and not as close to Seasons 1 and 2.

Yeah, I thought Boardwalk Empire was a 10 out of 10 show until Michael Pitt's character died. Then it slowly went downhill. I seem to recall the last season being bad. Right now I'm re watching The Sopranos. Damn, what a show! Maybe I will re watch Boardwalk next.

Van Alden was just great those first 2 seasons. His character really stole the entire series. I remember post season 2 tuning in just to see the Van Alden character. And also the guy who played Capone was good too.

Boardwalk bored the hell out of me. I guess for the flipside reason of people who don't like the Wire. Fair enough.

I thought the acting was terrible and didn't think it would be worth the investment of time that it would take to get through one, or multiple, seasons.

Uh oh. Favrefan is not going to take kindly to this kind of blasphemy.

It’s just a bad opinion that’s all. Says more about the person positing it than it does the subject in question.

As I said in my original post, I watched a grand total of three episodes. I'm far from an expert on the series. In those three episodes, I thought the actor that played McNulty was terrible and the actress that played the DA with whom he was sleeping, was terrible. The series also seemed like it was setting itself up as one of those "watch the crusading cop who breaks all the rules to get the bad guys" stories. Maybe it didn't turn out that way. As I said, I didn't finish it.

There are so many things to watch on television these days, so I decided to watch something that didn't immediately annoy me.

The Wire highly overrated. The last season was complete crap.

These are horrible The Wire opinions. S5 was not the best but the focus away from the paper storyline was strong.

It definitely was not a series about McNulty. I’d argue he was the weak link in the series and I’d be right.

That show was great.

damn things got personal fast for some actor who died.

I liked the Wire alot and I saw it live. If I didnt see it live i'm not sure how i would react. Maybe like breaking bad which I watched in a binge and i thought it was 'ok'.

What I liked about the Wire was the changing MAIN storylines. Like Season 2 was all about a ship yard and white guys. No other series at that time did something like that where in it's second season, changed the entire cast and story line only to go back to it in season 3.

Season 5 i did not like but a friend of my who was a teacher loved it. He said that season was made for teachers.

Boardwalk wasn't in the same tier as the Wire. Season 1 and 2 were great but I'd put them a notch below the Wire and 2 notches below Sopranos.

anyway...never understood the need to get high and LITERALLY RISKING YOUR LIFE every time you do. what a shame.

sad. i remember him on the soprano's - the episode where dopey jackie jr. 'hides out' in a black housing project.

thought he was good on boardwalk empire. agree with others that the series fizzled out after 3 seasons....chalky kept things interesting even when some sub-plots were lame.

both "the wire" and "boardwalk empire" were slow to get going but i liked where "the wire" was going a whole lot more. there were more layers to it. "boardwalk empire" was a pretentious snoozefest. terence winter has to be one of the most overrated writers out there, besides john wells and anyone associated with "lost".

the shame was, i wanted to like "boardwalk empire" because it definitely looked great and i like that era. i just think it needed more energy. the low key approach put me to sleep.

sad, though, about this guy's passing. he was a solid actor for sure.

Do we all agree that The Sopranos is by far the best cable tv show of all time?

Yellowstone is right up there. The Office is classic in the same way as Southpark and Seinfeld. Just infinitely watchable. The Sopranos was very good but no where near the Wire imho. The Wire did take quite a few episodes to character build. But then it was one solid plot line after another including the often panned last season.

I still have the pleasure of having never seen Breaking Bad. I am saving for that a long illness or bout of depression. Just banking good programming for a rainy day.

I like the Americans a lot because it is a historical period piece. I wish the ending was a little better, but it was solid, and I like it ahead of Sopranos.

Yellowstone is good, but I don't understand those who think it is up towards the top of an all time list.

IMO it is not even close to BB, The Wire, or the Sopranos. I don't even think it is as good as Better Call Saul or Ozark.

Well, you're in for a treat.

Unless you are watching it as you are actually dying. That would be some meta TV viewing. I hope that isn't the case.

Gotta disagree with Denis on the Americans. It was entertaining, but the plot and acting is at least a level below the Sopranos. And Sopranos isn't even GOAT for me.

It's all subjective of course, just my two cents.

S1 is better on a rewatch. It was just hard to understand what was going on with the first watch.

But, stop watching after The Winds of Winter episode, I think. If I remember the sequence right. There's still some moments after but the quality drops.

Knowing many people who sold coke and heroin, and the level of greed (& simple mindedness) I never could see buying or trusting hard drugs from those kinds of people.
