He would have beat Bill Clinton in 96 if the republicans had the balls to run him. RIP.

I think he would have. People love a war hero.

Schwarzkopf could have punched his own ticket even more.

Early polls had Powell way ahead of Clinton. Anything can happen during a campaign but he had a real chance.

IMO, he would have won.

None of this makes much sense.

Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Powell, etc are dishonorable.

Powell wasn't the person who made the decision as to what was to be said at the U.N. Bush and moreso Cheney made the call on that.

He was a puppet in that one.

He could have chosen not to be a puppet.

Unfortunately, he chose otherwise.

Off the top of my head, the 1996 primary field was Bob Dole, Steve Forbes, Lamar Alexander, and Phil Gramm. Pat Buchanan may have been in there, too. That's a weak field, even weaker than 2012, where at least Ron Paul made some kind of meaningful dent. In an election that was deep in the heart of Third Way triangulation, if it had just come down to "which of these two people who believe more or less the same things do you personally like more," I think Colin Powell could have won it in a nailbiter.

Nobody said u cant catch Covid twice. But catching it a 3rd time probly wont happen for a while.

Catching Covid twice is like catching Covid 5 months after u got the vaccine.

i liked buchanan. a proud natavist.

as far as powell - had a chance to make a stand and resign. politicians don't have to resign only if they are caught fucking the au pair. he would have forced much more scrutiny upon the bush administration's iraq policy. he had to have some misgivings - he was too smart to believe the absurd bin-laden/saddam alliance and had access to those who believed that iraq's WMD program was the great false-flag of the euphrates- 'chemical weapons in being', used to deter iran from attacking iraq. the speculation was that saddam's scientists led saddam to believe they were always one step away from developing these weapons - solely to keep themselves alive and away from a blindfold, a smoke and a firing squad.

Saying that he could have quit as opposed to make a false statement to the UN is a different argument than saying he was the reason that the statement was made in the first place. It was never his call as to what was going to be said there.

No one should be honoring Powell, nor Rumsfeld.

Both abused their positions of power. Many died unnecessarily.

He may have toppled Clinton but I never put stock in polls that are announced prior to a guy announcing their candidacy. At that point it is akin to a Q Rating.

It is a different argument. He acted as Bush's mouthpiece. That's it. It wasn't his decision to make and he was presented with the same faulty intelligence that everyone else was and instructed to make the sell about it. He wasn't the person behind the decision to make the sell. Bush and Cheney were

If Colin Piwell didn't testify at the UN then another Patsy would have and we still would have gone to war because that is what the Warhawks wanted at the time.

He wasn’t some patsy. He knew the intelligence better than Bush. He also had a reputation that would sell it. And based on his own statements he had misgivings about it. He either has agency or he was essentially a puppet of politicians his either career. In that case why should he be admired.

How could he know the intelligence better than Bush when it was Bush and not Powell that was provided with the intelligence brief in the first place? Just Asking A Question.

One of the greatest political oddities is how when Bush left office he was hated by Democrats and loved, or at least really liked, by Republicans. Then all the Democrats had to say was "Maybe Bush wasn't as horrible as we thought" and then Bush was hated by Republicans.

Powell allowed himself to be played. That was his mistake and it hurt his legacy tremendously.

Just asking a question is so stupid and childish. These reports are not monolithic secrets only for the eyes of the President. And a career military man would have a much better idea on how the intelligence was gathered, who gathered it, and how to verify it than a civilian President with so many other responsibilities.

Had he supported Trump the pass he’s getting now would have been revoked, buy when Powell had a chance to display real courage he wilted.

They sold the war to the public and other countries based on Powell's integrity.

The information seemed, as the kids on the board say, implausible. If Bush or Cheney had tried to make the case to the UN, it would not have been believed.
