If Ellsbury played for anybody but Boston he would not even figure in the discussion.

Longoria will have slightly better numbers, but Alexi has meant more to his team than anyone else.

Alexi or Longoria, I can't argue with either.

I voted for Longoria. All 3 are deserving and could've won in other years. It's a really tough call because all 3 are tremendous defensvely as well as offensively. The reason I voted for Longoria is when they called him up they inserted him right into the middle of the lineup. They put a TON of pressure on him to produce and he did. Ramirez had the luxury of watching for the first month and when Ozzie started playing him regularly they hit him 9th. I believe Ellsbury started the season hitting 9th also and in that powerhouse lineup he wasn't asked to carry the load like Longoria was.

I have a problem voting for older foreign players with professional experience as ROY. The age and experience gives them an unfair advantage over a young player who is fast tracked through the minors. That is why my vote goes to Longoria.

Not sure there is any advantage in that GD.
Most scouts rate the Cuban league at high AA level and the Japanese league at low AAA, so anyone coming up through the minors would face superior competition, and end up more prepared for MLB.
My main reason for giving the nod to Alexei is the difficulty of position he plays.

I went with Longoria for the simple fact that his numbers are virtually equal with Alexei (my #2) in 14 less games. Had he not gotten injured, this wouldn't even be a race.

Yes, but they arrive at MLB more physically and mentally mature. They extra time also allows them to perfect the more subtle aspects of their game. There are scouts that believe you should not move up a level in the minors, no matter the success, until you have X AB or IP. That is essentially what the Japanese/Cuban player is allowed and I think the results are obvious.

My vote went to the White Sox starting second baseman Alexei Ramirez. #10 has really worked his ass off, hitting .300 w/18 HR's & 66 RBI's, a far cry from the start of the season where Alexei was hitting around .100, scuffling badly at the plate & looking intimidated. He's also played a really solid second base & shortstop defensively. He may be a shortstop by trade, but I would keep Alexei right where he is at second & look elsewhere for his double play mate at short. I was also there at U.S. Cellular Field when Alexei was one of 4 straight guys to homer vs. Kansas City last month. The Sox have a real gem in Ramirez.

Some of that mental maturity is a result of unfamiliarity with the distractions of their new culture.
We always talk about players losing their hunger and drive, but it just might be a case of growing more comfortable in their new surroundings, and allowing distractions to affect their in-game focus.

That said, I can't really build a credible case against the 23 year old Longoria's accomplishments, even if Alexei is only 4 years older.

For a chick, Evan Longoria has put up some impressive #s, but Ramirez beats him big with average and steals.

That was my reasoning as well and I voted for Evan.

Longoria is the pick. Evan Longoria made the All-Star team even after starting the year in the minors (for a short period-but still..) He got hurt, but still was able to put up good numbers and I agree, that had he not gotten injured, the numbers would be quite different. Longoria is one of the big reasons the Rays had their first winning season and division Championship. No doubt in my mind, he will get the award. Alexi should be #2 and will likely be a cornerstone of the Sox organization for years to come.
