Singletary is the correct answer. His rep was based on his goofy eyes that were assumed to be a visual example of his extraordinary concentration. As I mentioned in another thread, he was always the 3rd guy on the pile.

The "and his punching" part throws me off. That was the best part of his game. He did have issues in coverage from time to time, the Steve Smith playoff game comes to mind.

He called all the plays on the best defense ever.

And he covered and plugged all the gaps. If anything, the eyes thing that broadcast TV focused on made people not understand how he held that group together.

He's not the greatest Bear ever but it became a lazy narrative, a hipster way to analyze the Bears and say he wasn't as good as people thought. He was very, very good. A key part of a tremendous D.

Wilber Marshall was the best linebacker in that trio.

I viewed the punching as borderline cheating. Though I admit I have no problem with someone raking their arm down on a ball carrier or QB to strip the ball...maybe because the raking is usually part of the tackle.

Singletary easy, probably the 7th or 8th best guy on that D. Shouldnt be in the HOF. Kyle Long was pretty damn good for 3 years and should have been cut.. ge was overrated AF
