I also want to see cities stop kowtowing to professional sports teams. However, the City's annual budget is somewhere around $6.5 billion. If they can keep the Bears around by spending a couple hundred million bucks, I would like to see them to do it.

Why should the city hand out massive subsidies for 8 events out of the calendar? There's no way it's a prudent financial management of taxpayer money. There are much better investments than the fucking McCaskey-run Bears.

A larger picture redevelopment of Soldier Field/McCormick area may be great. But hell no to Lori spearheading that endeavor.

From a dollars and cents standpoint, I suspect you're right. However, they can look it at as an advertising expense and a maintenance of the City's image.

yep, it's a place that literally can't be used half the year and when a large stadium concert is looking to schedule, the event will go to the larger, newer venue.

The few out-of-towners visiting Chicago to attend a Bears game will still stay in the city. Though there will always be a segment of visiting hayseeds like Ogie who enjoy their suburban Super 8 hotel and fine dining staples like Olive Garden or Buffalo Wild Wings.

yet you have also chosen the suburban life.

It seems that when it's time to put up or shut up, the loudest proponents of the city will choose the suburbs. I mean even the guy who wrote The Triumph of the City took his proceeds from the book and built a suburban mcmansion with the money.

She isn't wrong. The worst option would be to incur massive debt to placate the Bears in whatever hair-brained scheme is concocted.

Lori inherited a mess created from her predecessors and ass backwards McCaskey ownership. There is a reason sports franchises beg for public money when building new stadiums. Especially with football stadiums, these are dreadful investments. If stadiums were so lucrative you'd have ownership groups funding their own facilities and or outside investors clamoring to provide private financing.

Any possibility of Cook County and/or Illinois residents being stuck with increased taxes so one token Super Bowl, a few Big Ten Championships and five hundred hillbillies can inhale Monster Truck fumes would be criminal.

It's so easy for scumbag out-of-towners to run their mouth in celebration. They have no personal stake in the outcome. Yet, of course, they're ALWAYS the first to piss and moan about Illinois' tax burden. Such dishonest scumbags.

I’m not a proponent of the city, other than the year I was a hall director at SXU I never lived there. It’s just weird that some dude in Arkansas spends so much time posting about how Chicago sucks. Arkansas sucks too and yet I have no desire to ever post about it. If Chicago is so bad go post about the Arkansas Travelers instead and give up on the Sox.

Your rambling has nothing to due with the ridiculous claim that Soldier Field has tenants banging down the door for it's services.

As of today, speaking from a short-term perspective, she is correct. We often hear the incessant complaints by Bears fans that the Bears lost due to a shitty field from event XYZ being held before a game.

Hopefully, you'll stop letting Lori live rent free in your head. Putting your chips behind the McCaskey's sounds like a wonderful idea.

Imagine actually thinking anyone wants to use that stadium

The few non-Bears events it gets right now won't even stay there if given a larger dome option in the suburbs. I guess the only thing Soldier Field will have left will be high school football games

If you re-read the thread I base my criticisms of her in reality. I avoid letting my dislike for a person to develop into an obsessive mental illness unlike Ogie and yourself.

Stats isn't wrong here....these stadiums are a money pit. Let's keep in mind, however, why cities and states DO fund them. It isn't necessarily the burning desire to retain the teams. There are contracts awarded to connected firms and "partners" and pockets are lined. Nothing new here.

The Bears are going to get their stadium....Chicago, Arlington Heights....somewhere. We will see where the money is sourced and how it's funded.

This isn't a defense of Lightfoot....she's going to take an L for this one, just like the Bears and the City Leaders before her get one for abomination that is the current Soldier Field. My problem with Lightfoot in this is she's talking nonsense. Come up with a site and tell the Bears...."here ya go....build your stadium out of your own pockets". Interestingly, the only 2 NFL stadiums built with private funds are Los Angeles and New Jersey. That clearly tells you it's a not a financial sound investment.

It would seem a multiuse domed stadium which could be booked year round for concerts and trade shows would still lose money, but gambling is the new angle with this particular venue. One of the biggest obstacles to negotiating with the city of Chicago was that the Bears wanted gambling, a sports book or casino on site would keep the cash registers ringing year round. Not sure how the bumbling McKaskey family who gets duped every two to four years by smooth talking GM/Coach candidates negotiates through all that, but it would seem the NFL and gaming interest both want a state of the art venue for one of the largest NFL markets, plenty of deep pocket interests that are far brighter than Virginia and George will likely make this happen.

Exactly. The Bears leaving Chicago is actually a good thing for Chicago.

How did we shift from pro teams not being allowed in vegas because of gambling to teams now owning sports books?
