I have been a big fan of Ken Griffey Jr. for years and wanted to see what you all think of Griffey in Chicago. He has not put up good power numbers and with Quinten out it's good that you guys have the depth.

If this were 5 years ago, I'd be a lot more excited about Ken Griffey, Jr. in a White Sox uniform than I am right now. While he's made some good catches in the field, he's been a flop at the plate since the Sox traded second baseman Danny Richar & pitcher Nick Masset to Cincinnati at the trade deadline. If it were up to me, Griffey would not be back in a Sox uniform come Spring Training 2009.

I know he has a $13 million option for 2009; doubtful that the Sox pick that up I would think.

I thought the Reds were covering most of Griff's contract when he got traded here...

Ken Griffey, Jr.??

Oh, there he is, sitting on the bench with Fred McGriff, George Bell, Cliff Floyd and all other late-season traded has-beens put on Chicago baseball teams for that proverbial "extra boost." The allure is long gone.

You forgot Jim Edmonds. Whoops! I guess sometimes it works out.
EDIT: I suppose he wasn't technically a "late season trade", but he was a has-been in many people's eyes, including my own.

Apples and Oranges. Nobody was banking on Edmonds though. It was a, "eh, we'll see what happens" move. He could do no worse than what Pie was doing, and after a handful of games he was on thin ice with the Cubs.

Yeah, but was anyone really banking on Griffey? If so, they were pretty dumb. I thought it added a marginal depth, and I was really worried when they said they wanted to play him in center due to his old bones. With the Griffey trade, I didn't feel we were giving up very much, but what we got in return would be average -- much like an insurance policy heading down the stretch. I thought it was a good move, though not an earth-shattering one.

Thoughts on Griffey-He's old, he has to cheat on the fastball now, as his bat is too slow to catch a good fastball otherwise. His defense is average at best. He cant run anymore. They will NOT pick up his option. Kenny should have gotten bullpen help instead, or another starter.

What's to think about him? He's awful. There's really no need to break it down.

I don't think they were putting all thier eggs in the Griffey baseket, but they probably thought they would get more out of him than they actually have. I didn't think he would be this bad.

I think the griffey trade was made for one reason, if the sox dont make the playoffs, I think they will, that KW could fall back on "we were going for it, we traded for a hof'er". I think the sox would have been better suited with Dunn and even with not the greatest farm system, they had enough to get him, but who knows I guess.

I think it was a PR trade, everyone tells me I am wrong, but I still think they traded for a name, not a need.

I really cannot believe that he only has 1 home run since joining the Sox.

It blows my mind.

He was done when they got him panther, it shouldnt be a surprise. Dont sweat it though, they will win their division, get to the world series, but unfourtantly get sweeped by the cubs.

Honestly, the soxs will make a run the playoffs, i sincerely feel they will, but i think the bullpen is going to be the downfall of the team in the playoffs.

No chance in hell, but thanks for the thought.

Griffey is washed up, but he is a body, and he does have some value as a left handed bat.

I'd prefer to see D.Wise, Anderson and Dye in the OF, but I'm sure Guillen will use Griffey for at least 2 games at Minnesota.

Um, check the scoreboard - I believe we have won the last three games against your minor league team, and we would have home field. Only difference is now you have Harden, and we won the last time we faced him.

panther, if the cubs faced the white sox in the world series, would i be able to comment on the series or is that considered white sox business? Its also cubs business, so i guess i could, but it is also sox business, its all so confusing to me.

Yeah, SHARK broke that story (via Sports Illustrated). SHARK went down to U.S. Cellular with a microphone and demanded the full story...either that or he got the information from a website.

Sorry, Kid Cairo. Wishful thinking...I was on my way home when the White Sox flagship, 670 "The SCORE", reported the SI.com story that Ken Griffey, Jr. won't be back on the Southside & that they won't pick up his option. The Sox want to borrow a page from the Tampa Bay Rays & Minnesota Twins, hoping to become a faster team in 2009...
