So how does that work exactly?

You have an addiction and need to be outside. Others also have that addiction and need to be in your space.

So, in that forced interaction, is it awkward? Do people become friends?

I'd just want to be left alone to wallow in my smoking addiction and ponder life.

Its how I became a smoker.

Before I joined the army, I was a social smoker at best, not even always. Would occasionally bum a cigarette while drunk with friends who smoked.

Got to the Army, as soon as I got out of basic training I went to AIT. When we were working, the smokers all got a smoke break every hour on the hour. If you were a non smoker, you had to keep working. But you couldnt be a non smoker and go out to the smoke pit with then, they literally had an NCO out there in charge of making sure that didnt happen.

So, as an inherently lazy person who didn’t really mind smoking, i was like well this is an easy choice.

Was always weird to me the army incentivized it like that but to be fair i think it was due to the Army’s general incompetence and not intentional

I had a 2-pack/day second-hand habit from age 0-18 and then I moved out.

Never took it up again.

Yeah, I think that's a bunch of bullshit.

It's like coffee at work. Why do they get free coffee? I don't drink coffee.

I drink Diet Coke. I should get free Diet Coke.

I've made this argument for 25 years and everyone looks at me like it is not a logical argument.

I was thinking about you...My husband watched a whole bunch of behind the story horror movie stuff. Have you seen it?

I bought lots of coke products on sale this week. I'll throw a 12 pk to Noisy. I'd like to burn a cancer stick with him or drink sparkling wine.

Not including cigars.

saw a play about this once, maybe at Angel Island? It was after the indoor smoking and x number of feet away from entrances regs had taken over and driven smokers into back alleys. The set was a loading dock with a dumpster on stage. Supposedly a downtown office building; so disparate smokers from different companies would end up sharing space daily as they fed their addiction and tortoise-raced toward a painful death of slowly drowning from lack of oxygen. I think the actors ginned up the idea for it cuz they got to smoke indoors throughout; like how White Trash Wedding and a Funeral allowed/encouraged both performers and audience to get shit-faced during the performance.

I hope his wife isn't drinking soda ash. Maybe Dr Pepper makes a soda water.

Cigs arent as bad for you as they say. The people who have problems smoke a pack a day or so. 2 or 3 sticks a day wont do shit. And people that cant have just a couple have addictive personalities and are going to die soon anyway

Wrong but keep telling yourself that if it makes you feel better.

When I quit, it was hard to give that up. For a while there I would go out with them and chew the Nicorette. Between that and driving, those were the two times I missed it most. And the bars too.

They have a smokers hut out front of our corporate offices by the parking lot. I see the same folks out there all the time. I wish I had the time to waste 10 minutes every hour. I used to be
annoyed by the whole thing but it is what it is. I smoked from 17-22 or so and then pretty much only did it when I was drinking for a while and then just quit. I can't see paying $8 a pack or
whatever it has gotten up to now. When I started they were like $2 and you could buy a carton for $19.95. Started smoking Marlboro Reds and then settled on lights after a few years.

Nicotine makes you a better worker with the downside being that it lowers your life expectancy significantly but that is a chance your employer is willing to take. It's the free market at work. If it was legal, they'd give you MDMA breaks or cocaine breaks too so you could show back up and get that temporary brain bump to maximize shareholder value.

It still seemed the most bizarre thing about working in the food service industry is that everyone seemed to smoke. You love food so much to spend your life preparing it and yet your turn your mouth into an ashtray so you probably spend your life tasting food as if it had been eaten in the middle of a forest fire.
