problem is the unions suck up here... and a guy with your experience is in extremely high demand for the private sector, mainly because theres so many idiots. you could probably pull $100k/yr without much overtime if any, if you find the right shop. the union rate has a better benefits of course, but also spottier work and youre at the mercy of whatever the hall says. i liked the unions in illinois, i fucking hate them up here.

you could also go on your own up here. theres not a lot of government oversight or fees to run a business, and people crave trustworthy contacts. between the outskirts of milwaukee and madison, there is a ton of small towns that are filled with small shops run by drunks. if you show up half sober and give them honest service, you will have very loyal customers. lots of rich fucks with summer cabins that have nothing but problems because their places freeze every year too.

I've been thinking about changing my employment lately.

You would be perfect for Mr. Hollands!!!! There are some insanely sweet gigs here once you get to know the rich clients that have 2 mil cabins on all the lakes north and west of Milwaukee. A carpenter we work with was the general for a friends 1.8 mil remodel of his summer home and pulled down a nice 180K for a few months of work.

I haven't lived in the Midwest for close to a decade, so maybe I'm outta touch with things there, but couldn't Darkside just set up his own business in Illinois and clean up? As far as I can tell, people are desperate all over to find anyone reliable to do just about anything that is slightly more complicated than screwing in a light bulb. I imagine making the transition to going independent would be tricky, but it could be fairly easy and very cheap to test the waters by running targeted advertising campaigns on Facebook. I know a couple of handymen/carpenters who have had overwhelming responses to their ads; not the same as what Darkside does, I know, but close enough.

how much did the labor and materials for the actual remodel cost? and they threw another 180K on top of that? that sounds like government/public spending habits not private wealth

Private, smart rich person would get the general and subs to front the money for time and materials, promising to pay them at the end. And then when they show up with their receipts offer to pay them at 30 cents on the dollar, eventually settling at 50 to 70 cents on the dollar from what the contractors asked.

I don't believe home heating costs are nearly as variable as gas prices are.

When I was in the Boston area many many used to still have oil for heat. In your guess what percentage have switched over?

Over half the population in Eastern Ma supposedly uses natural gas. A lot of older houses have converted from oil to electric heat pumps due especially to the incentives the state provides to make the change.

Wood fireplace FTW. Had 1/2 cord of oak delivered last weekend, and had fires Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Glorious. Probably be too warm to have one this weekend, but there will be plenty of colder days ahead.

Hah my place is a four seasons home. When gone, like now, I keep it in the mid-50’s. I also had a heat pump installed when I got a new AC unit. Otherwise, I am on LP as we do not have nat gas delivery to the place.

Not sure where the humble brag is here:

1. a "very large gas fireplace";
2. a "gas fireplace...that I don't think I'll turn on all winter"; or
3. a "very large gas fireplace...that I don't think I'll turn on all winter.

Need a ruling from someone.

Large wood burning fireplace is the humble brag winner I think.

Makes me glad that I don't have natural gas and my local power co-op gets its energy from a hydroelectric dam 1 county over. We have been lucky not to see any hike yet in our bills.

i generally agree. for me the worst part is taking phone calls all day from idiots that never intend to pay you. once you get to a point where you have a front office staff that deals with that crap, it's fine. but takes time to get to 10+ employees.

not to mention all of your 'friends' that expect pro-bono work, but i get that now as it is all the fucking time.

but, all that said, it's always an option. at least around here, people really do want to call a small shop they trust. and those are extremely hard to find.

thats really smart. freeze/thaw cycles ruin any place over the years. even the damn wirenuts inside all the walls condensate and oxidize over time, and ive seen circuits fail when there was nothing improper about the connections.

I gladly do some pro bono or at cost work for my close friends. But truth be told it's never a good time really because when I get busy at work I get busy man. Just got done with my 4th straight 12 hour day. Tomorrow looks just as bad. I mean the overtime isn't all bad. I'll be retired in 10 years. Or working part time to keep the psychosis to a minimum.

Yes, North Shore Gas.
I'm on actual readings. Also, we have a natural gas pool heater, so that would have kicked up September a bit. It still wasn't crazy high.
