Made his MLB debut on June 22 of THIS YEAR, and is about to sign a $225m contract extension. Wow.

Joe Charboneau was born 40 years too late.

That's going to be a steal for the Rays if he stays healthy.

I don't think they did.....I think he made the league minimum last year.

During Joe Charboneau's rookie year, Cleveland fans chanted, "Go go Charboneau!"

They had a song that became relatively popular.

Go, Joe, Charboneau......

Not sure they have to, they got the guy they for sure want long term. Not going to cost them much at all couple of more years of Randy and then they can make that decision. Although, who knows what the Labor agreement will bring.

I hope him and the guy from the Braves weren't coerced into signing these ridiculously long and cheap deals by those shitbag agencies that front players money in exchange for a massive chunk of their 1st big contract. I don't see any reason why he would sign this before the whole CBA changes in the near future.

The poor guy. Him and Mark Fidrych.

It's a shame about Fidrych.

The Bird could have probably been something special.

Jeez, I just Google'd what he might have done.

Didn't realize he died in a farming accident with a PTO.

My Dad and I (farm story) were walking beans and the field next to us the father (experienced guy - friend of the family) had overalls with a drawstring, got caught in the PTO, stripped every bit of clothing off his body broke every bone in his arms and legs and passed.

I became an accountant.

Happy Thanksgiving.

When you come from absolutely nothing and someone is throwing around generational money, it is very hard to turn down.

That sounds really terrible...mostly for that guy, but also for you and your dad to witness.

We were far enough away we didn't witness it, Thank God.

We just saw the ambulances come and wondered what was happening. Found out the details later.

We were probably a mile away.

Power take-off. It transfers the power from the engine of the tractor to whatever you might be pulling behind it.

Real farmers can correct me. But, my recollection, as a yout', it was a connection that spun at crazy high speed connected to what you were pulling.

You needed to be very careful for the reasons I posted above. There was no safety shut-off on those things back then. Maybe now, I don't know.

I'm tired of talking about Nagy. Nothing will happen now.

Can I continue to use this thread about a promising SS to describe more horrific farm accidents?

Speaking of promising young shortstops, has anybody ever read up on Lou Boudreau?

I-L-L....

But, he really was a fantastic multi-sport athlete. He was managing during WW2 as he won MVP and World Series.

You'd never think based on, well, at least at my age, he seemed like doddering old fool behind the mic as a broadcaster. But I was too young to know him as an athlete. He lost college eligibility for signing a contract to be a pro...IN THE 1930s...and still stuck around to get his degree and coach the basketball team.

But his story, for that time, you could make a movie. Maybe I'll write a screenplay after I get the Bears job and work through Thanksgiving.

He led his high school (Thorn-something) to top four finishes in basically every sport...just an all-around great athlete.

Put me to sleep as a broadcaster, though.

Is anyone here gay? I wonder if a guy would say "Would." Not sure. (For the bi-sexual guys on the board like Caller Bob, I'm not interested in your take unless you are all in.)

You're covering a lot of ground with that response.

Like a great shortstop would. Boudreau invented the infield shift for Ted Williams.

He had a willingness to think outside the box.

Modern ones have a cover that the shaft spins inside of but often they don't work as they break and the guard will spin on the outside of the shaft. Usually not as bad mind you but Shit. It will run as high as 1000 RPM on bigger equipment with smaller ones topping out at 540 (they will run faster but that's only if you are over revving the tractor or slower if you don't need full speed). It would be an awful way to go. Occasional on ag twitter I will see people post videos of someone trying out for the Darwin awards.. PTO isn't really on that level but it is avoidable, Didn't know the bird had did that way.

10 years ago or so I was standing on our front stoop and saw an ambulance pull out into a field about 3/4 mile away. Guy had rolled one of those old tricycle internationals and gotten trapped underneath it while mowing on a hillside.

My Uncle Bob essentially died that way. He was on a Super M, this was early-'50s, 20 years before I was born but he got off to open a gate and accidentally kicked that center gear shift in and the back tire rolled him as he jumped off. He was about 20.

He was my Dad's younger brother and I only understood much later that is why my Dad never really let me do the really dangerous stuff if he could avoid it and didn't really encourage me to stay on the farm. He knew I wasn't suited for it.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone.

That is quite a contract that guy got.

I don't think I knew he started the Ted Williams shift, and that's odd, because I vividly remember this baseball card.

I've read different stories where Williams was bitter about the shift and said it cost him 20-30 points of his lifetime average, and other stories where Williams either said it didn't matter or he learned how to over come it.

Equipment is a lot safer now with ROPS and cabs and wider front axle tractors and all the sensors involved. You can still f up mind you but a lot of risks have been removed. Just stay the hell away from moving grain please.

Good for wander, agreed. Hopefully isn’t like the marlins signing people and then shipping them away.
