Bison that has been on loose for months in Wauconda, Island Lake spotted by police officer

A bison that has been on the loose since September after escaping from its owner in the Island Lake area was spotted by a police officer this week running across the roadway.

The Island Lake Police Department said one of their police officers spotted Island Lake’s “beloved bison,” calling the animal, “as elusive as Sasquatch himself.”

In a video published by the department on social media on Sunday, the bison was seen frolicking across Darrell Road just south of Case Road in unincorporated Wauconda at night.

I think I related this tale before here, a high school classmate of mine and her husband raised a few cattle on a small farm north east of here. He got the idea that buffalo would flourish on their place, and ordered six bred heifers. The guy shows up to deliver them, looks around and says "where do you want them". When pointed to a pasture, he replies "No, seriously, that won't hold them, where do you want them?". The husband relents, and they open the old dairy barn doors. Delivery guy backs up tot the barn and says "Off the trailer, they are yours". The buffalo run off the trailer, through the back wall of the barn, through every fence on the farm and off into the woods and orchards nearby.

My classmate has horses, she rode barrels at rodeo. She gets some friends together, and with horses and four-wheelers they find and capture four of the six buffalo. Two are on the loose for months, similar to Lakemoor. Husband finally contacts some qualified guy from a big game hunting preserve way up north. He tracks them down and shoots them both. Story was that he asked "where do yo want them shot?" husband replies, wherever you find them... "No, I mean in the heart, or eye, or where. " Then proceeds to drop one in the eye from a mile away in high winds at dusk, or something more believable than that. Tim was often known to embellish the truth slightly. I forget how much he charged to track them, but it was a bunch. They were concerned of the liability if struck by a vehicle.

That is crazy, sad, and hilarious (just out the back wall and through every fence). What did they do with the four surviving ones? And what's the best way to manage buffalo on a farm?

I think I mentioned this here once before, but if you are ever interested in seeing bison in person, Nachusa Grasslands out in Lee County has a herd of 120 or so (that number may be high or low, I cant remember the exact number) that range across 1,500 acres or so. They are usually visible from one of the many different places you can view them from. Sometimes if you are lucky they are no more than a few feet away if they are near the fences, and other times you can see them stampeding in larger or smaller groups. They are absolutely massive, and impressive to see. This herd has free roam of the grasslands with little to no human interference, they just move about as they please. It is especially impressive in the winter with the cold and the snow, and in the spring you can often see mothers with their calves.

The facilities for bison have to be crazy stout and tall. When I took an animal/range science class out in Montana we visited the open range segment of Turner’s operation and saw pictures of the siding facilities. Instead of running the older bulls through they sold hunts for them at like 10k a head. Was room and pretty good food and I think the processed the meat but not sure at that price. Think you got a discount if you dropped the larger coin on an Elk hunt.

We had a few farms around here that ran them. One was along 80 and they had Elk and fallow deer as well. Rarely see any animals there but It looks grazed One of the lockers around here processed them at one point for a local farm. Until one tore up their chute. I think they got it put down before it was running the fields of Bureau county.

I had a lamb break loose in Eureka once. Evidently the department has a sharpshooter and he had to be called in to prevent car accidents. While not uncommon I guess it happens once a season or two.

Could not agree more. When I went to school in Montana, I made a few trips to Yellowstone. Was within 20-30 yards of some of these beasts more than once. They definitely 'move as they please' and if they happen to be standing on the road or something, you literally have no choice but to wait until they move. Its amazing how a land animal that large can move so gracefully sometimes.

We take our daughter down to the north unit of teddy roosevelt state park every so often. She loves seeing the bison. We’ve been very close to them.

I'm pretty sure they sold them back to the place they came from, this has been 20 years or so. Since they were bred and carrying calves, slaughter doesn't sound most economical, but may have been the answer.

The biggest place near here, and probably the source of these animals, was up in Fennville, Michigan. Right off I-196, just east of the exit, the handling area is still visible. That place used railroad ties/telephone poles and used guardrail for fencing. I understand the bison/bison ability to jump, almost rivals that of Dele, so fences are really tall as well as stout. Even then, I think it is truly dependent on the attitude of the animal as to how well they stay contained. I've seen a calf run right through an electric tensile fence when it seemed cornered and another hurdle a four foot fence when separated from the rest of the group.
