Going to prison might end up being like heaven for a burrito like Jussie

His punishment should be equivalent to what his alleged attackers would have faced, especially given the egregious nature of his lying.

Thing is his BS was not harmless of victimless. In fact, all the cops working on it were taken away from other possible pressing calls. And the money wasted is huge.

If he doesn’t get a year in the state pen then why bother with law and punishment?

I would guess a short stint in the Cook County Jail (60 days, day for day), 24 months of probation, and payment of restitution to the City (if he hasn't already paid restitution as part of the prior disposition). However, it's up to the judge, so who knows?

I hope not.

He would get killed in County.

They put Tank Johnson in there back in 2005

Well, he did piss of the judge by showing up almost an hour late for the verdict.

Plus, by him testifying fucks up his getting lenient sentencing and actually allows the judge to make it worse for him

Most prisoners would rather get a year of state time than 60 days of actual time in Cook County. Partly b/c a year in state pen usually translates to 3 to 6 months; mostly b/c county time sucks in every way possible and Cook County's the worst. But I think if you get a sentence of a year or less you end up serving it in county regardless, cuz you'll be out a so quick no point in processing you to state

He needs to go away for at least two years.

How else can they justify committing all the police resources and spending hundreds of man-hours on this case?

Hope this dumbass gets jail time and is forced to use career earnings to pay the city back for all the time wasted on this circus.

I don't think anyone is served particularly well by him going to jail.

I'd like to see a significant fine to recover the costs of investigating. I doubt that guy has much in terms of savings.

I'd actually like to see him have to apologize as this was a crime against the people of this city. He needs to acknowledge to the world that he made up a story using stereotypes about people during the height of civil unrest in order to gain publicity for his career just as vociferously as he claimed the crime. He won't, so there will really be no satisfaction.

So, give him community service to the people of chicago. Make him live and spend his money here for a while. I don't want to see him doing community service that will only help to make him look like a good guy. He needs to do something where he is getting his hands dirty and with no cameras allowed. Let him work the night shift at a shelter on christmas and new years eve. Let him do something for the families of slain police officers, whose profession he brought into disrepute.

Then at the end, ask every one of those actors and politicians who supported him to put together a benefit. Make it for something truly chicago like the public pension fund or a new park in which to place columbus and jefferson statues.

This wasn't a dangerous crime but it is really offensive for all of its implications. The people who were duped should be outraged but they'd sooner have it forgotten.

I'd be in favor of this. Give him the choice of a public apology or jail time.

yes to all of this. but i do think he deserves to spend a little time in jail. nothing more than a year, if that. but more than that, a public apology that he actually has to mean--standing up in front of a judge or a group of people, and legitimately say he's sorry. i think that's even more impactful than him serving time in jail.

and totally agreed on the people who immediately came to his support. this doesn't mean you support racial violence by calling him out. it means you can call out racial hoaxes as immature, irresponsible, and potentially dangerous to society.

Yeah you're sure to get a sincere apology that way.
This dude lied on the stand andied right up to his conviction. He's an actor. I don't need him to act his way through an apology. I don't need an apology at all.

The more I think about it, all of these high-profile virtue-signaling goofs going over the top to defend him right out of the gate probably made him feel he had to push through and stick to his story.

No one is getting an apology from him anyways. He still thinks this was a racist attack on him. 1+1=3 because some people fucking say it does and you are a racist homophobe if you don't agree.

A forced public apology for maligning the state and wasting government resources seems a little Struggle Sessiony to me.

He’s already facing the most severe punishment, in terms of the hit to his reputation and how that’ll impact his career. I feel like community service and a fine would be sufficient.

Fuck it. Put him in jail. He knew exactly what he was doing, which is why he employed stereotypes for his own self-interest.

This is a dangerous person. He makes us all stupid. He doesn't muddy the discourse over what is just and right; he does not merely offer nothing; instead, he pollutes it. He deserves no sympathy.

No need to compel his speech. But let's agree that an adult faking a hate crime is a bad thing to do and that it has some serious consequences.

It would not surprise me one bit for this to positively impact his career.

He'll produce some tearful interview on Extra about how past discrimination produced a sort of mental illness that caused him to act the way he did.

We know the guy isn’t remorseful though, right*?

I assume he’s a good enough actor to fake his way through an apology, which may offer a quicker path to redemption career-wise. Just let him hang out there, do some good (state compelled) work and get on with his life.

*hat tip Spiegel - I’m trying to work in a rhetorical ‘right?’ more often so I can feel like people are agreeing with me mid-sentence
