Bowles was also a terrible HC whose team got considerably worse over his tenure.

Hopefully there’s some happy medium between ‘young guy who thinks he’s playing Madden’ and retread.

Bowles’ name came up for the Chicago Bears’ potential opening during Heavy’s I’m Just Saying podcast on Nov. 24. Rumors of the Bears planning to fire head coach Matt Nagy surfaced before the team’s Thanksgiving Day game at Detroit, though later debunked by ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Nagy’s future in Chicago still looks cloudy though as the Bears sit at 4-7.

Bowles went 24-40 as the head coach, and he's almost 60. I guess the franchise is in a offensive coach, defensive coach pattern. So he might be it.

All these other names are just Typical Bears Shit. They should already have contacted Harbaugh to see what his interest level is. You really want change? Go and get a real coach with a proven track record that knows what he’s doing. I know Jim Harbaugh can make this franchise relevant again.

They're not going to bring in a high profile guy. Who's the last high profile guy they brought in? I think they've just hired former coordinators looking for their first HC job except for Fox.

Jauron - first time HC, low profile
Smith - first time HC, low profile
Trestman - first time HC, no profile
Fox - former HC, established profile
Nagy - first time HC, no profile

There's a pattern here - conservative hires and zero appetite for going big and bold.

I think Harbaugh makes about $11M a year and has multiple years left. If I'm not mistaken, the Bears would have to buy out his contract and pay him a shit load of money.

Factually speaking, he makes $4 million/year and has a $2 million buyout.

Then he should be in the top 2 of candidates.

The buyout for Harbaugh is $1.5 to $2 million total for Harbaugh to pay if he leaves.

Lovie did not have a low profile. He was one of the hottest candidates in the league. He was better known than half of the head coaches. Credited with turning the Rams around more that Martz.

Agree. First time head coach, and likely cheap, but not a true low profile candidate.

I realize the front office/ownership most likely is too malignant and incompetent to actually go get Harbaugh..

.. but that doesn’t change the fact that he’s the best option by a wide margin. McDaniels is intriguing, but the only thing we know about him is that he’s an absolute failure as an HC.. and what we know about guys who coached under Billy B is that his genius doesn’t accompany his assistants when they leave his nest.

Harbaugh was terrific at the NFL level, faltering only when oddball ownership and front office issues became too much to deal with. He took a busted Alex Smith and showed how to use him, he took a nobody Collin Kaepernick and turned him into a household name.. he’s amongst the top coaches in NFL history in wins after the 1st 5 years.. and the other 2 coaches on that list inherited plug-n-play HoF QB’s and ready made teams.

There are of course other names like Bienemy and Toub out there -but going for them over the proven Harbaugh would be a huge mistake and missed opportunity. To me, this is a no brainer. Contact Harbaugh and if he wants the job, give it to him and don’t think twice about it.

McDaniels has the highest chance of being a complete train wreck, upside of not, so I figure that’s who the Bears will get.

Fair point but still 4/5 hires since 2000 are first-time HCs. Harbaugh is legit but the Bears don't go for someone like him, except arguably when they went after Fox. I don't know if this means they're cheap or they like to hire people who aren't going to demand more power because they're just happy to be a HC for the first time.

Just as he Bears like their draft picks pre-injured, they prefer to hire head coaches who come pre-neutered. They shy away from guys who actually have a vision for transforming the franchise and a plan for implementing that vision. They would never hire Harbaugh.

Do we want Harbaugh to win the National Championship to give him more incentive to leave or would we prefer that he fails so his stock doesn't rise too high?

Leslie Frazier is probably the most amusing candidate. Hopefully it's him.

He'd only be slightly worse than Toub.

I love the rationale provided here for hiring that guy:

He interacts with the whole team Well, except for the majority of really important players on any given team. They don't play special teams. Basically, he interacts mostly with second- and third-teamers. Further, he has had literally zero impact in developing any players outside of a couple returners or other specialists.

He's mastered ST strategy. If we're going to use strategic acumen as criteria in selecting a head coach, wouldn't you rather have a guy who has excelled at offensive or defensive game planning? Special teams strategy basically amounts to getting guys to pursue properly, block right a few times per game, and run a trick play here and there. The responsibilities of offensive/defensive coordinators dwarf those of special teams coaches when it comes to the strategic aspects of the game and any assertion to the contrary is patently absurd.

I haven't looked at all of the "top" candidates yet, but Harbaugh would certainly be near the top of my list.

I liked Harbaugh before he went to Michigan.
