The tornado is the Prime suspect in the murder.

There are a lot of reasons that Amazon could be DBOTW but this doesn't appear to be one of them.

The National Weather Service said a tornado touched down in Edwardsville at approximately 8:35 p.m. local time Friday. Site leaders at the warehouse, known as DLI4, told employees on duty at the facility to take shelter around 8:16 p.m. local time, Amazon said. The tornado likely formed in the parking lot then rolled through the site, Amazon said.

I’m not sure what they’re supposed to do. “ hey everyone , get the fuck out, a tornado is coming “
“ hey everyone , take shelter here , a tornado is coming “

I doubt they physically prevented people from leaving. They probably highly encouraged people not to with the tornado outside.

The big thing they will take heat for is there are no basements for shelter in those warehouses they are throwing up left and right. In fact, no place secure at all. They are essentially huge tin sheds.

They were trying to prevent workers from forming a union.

I can't claim to have been in any Amazon warehouses but I've been in similar locations which include concrete rooms (often restrooms) which are designated as storm shelters.

At Amazon The bathrooms are tiny relative the amount of employees onsite at any given shift. No way you could fit them all in.

Knowing the quality of Amazon products the warehouses are probably giant pole barns.

So it was either the workers leave the warehouse to fend for themselves, or they die in the warehouse.

They are. And that's what the lawsuits should target. Not the decision to have the Employees stay or go.

I think the biggest complaint is that Amazon prohibits employees from having cell phones on during their shift. I don't know if employees are able to have them in their possession but have to leave them off, but I assume once the tornado was announced, they could turn them on (I would hope).

Their phones must be off? Sounds like being in a health class taught by the brain damaged meatball high school football coach.

The story I saw earlier was that only one side had a concrete shelter, and the six people working there who died were on the other side of the warehouse when the alarms went off. The 40 on the side with the shelter survived.

So you are basing this thought on the products they sell rather than any actual insight into the building construction?

I don’t know how we survived before cell phones. Can you imagine if there were a fire? Somebody ought to invent a way to communicate with a mass of people in the event of an emergency.

So you want me to put on my engineering hat, and discuss the schematics of the building to counter your apparent need to defend Amazon employee safety?

That’s not going to happen.

I’d rather just lazily b1tch about the mega corporation.

I don't think telling people to leave during a tornado would have been the best idea. If they were making them work when it hit then that is another story.

I gathered that. As someone who is regularly involved in opening industrial facilities I can assure you that OSHA along with the NFPA & IBC heavily regulate safety and construction requirements. Amazon has to follow code just like everyone else. Further I’d be shocked if they don’t have a whole department dedicated to safety and code compliance. There is little chance they were skirting the laws to save a bit of money.

I suspect their "don't leave" was more of a shelter in place thing as they had told people to stop working and go to the shelter 15 minutes before the tornado struck.

Now if you do want to talk about OSHA violations, that candle factory in Mayfield is full of them. Holy shit are there horror stories from that place.

The story on the news this morning (WGN, I think?) mentioned that there was an earlier tornado warning an hour or two before the actual tornado. With the forecast calling for more during the night, people asked to leave after that first "false alarm" and were told they would be fired.

They may have blood on their hands, but disappointingly, that article doesn’t really show it.

The primary complaint in the article is that they didn't have tornado drills but I highly doubt those are required anywhere but in schools. I don't remember ever having an adult tornado drill.

Amazon is going to be sued by the families and they will pay them out.

I mean , I’ve never been allowed to go home because the weather is bad . I still don’t know what Amazon is supposed to do in that situation .

They are definitely in a bad spot, but if the rumors of “You leave, and you’re fired” are true then that is not going to bode well for them in court.

That is if there is more than witness to that threat, or it is in a text/email somewhere.

we were never going to be fired for leaving, but we would be "dinged" (you'd only be fired if that was your third one in 90 days). but they would stay open for everything. state of emergencies, 9/11, it wouldn't matter. we had the effects of a major east coast hurricane flood the streets and the only place open was PHL1.

i still have friends that work there and they said nothing's changed in that regard.

They will probably settle because that is what always happens but it's not like a Tornado Watch is a reason they have to shut down all businesses in the area and let everyone go home.

Amazon will just pay them out to save the PR nightmare of a court case.
