They just had a really good documentary on him before football on Saturday. I’d guess they’ll re-run it again now that this happened. Recommend it if you missed it, some great footage and interviews.

MILWAUKEE - Asked restaurant host:
"God, did you hear about John Madden?"
Host: "No."
Me: "Died. He killed himself."
Thought he would cry

Lived to be almost twice the amount of time Jeff Dickerson was allowed to be on this planet. Such a cosmic crapshoot

How unexpected is it when an 85 year old who didn't appear to be the model of health 20 years ago passes away. More surprising that he made it to 85.

my all-time favorite NFL analyst. in his prime his energy was unparalleled. he was excitable and made the game more fun to watch.

he was well parodied by MADTV as well, thanks to frank caliendo's on-point impression.

RIP. hope he got to enjoy his retirement. i want to see that doc that was made.

I loved how in the earlier Genesis games, when a player would get injured an ambulance would drive onto the field and run over any other player in its way.

He's unique in that everyone knew who he was. All of us remember him as an analyst while all the youngsters know him from the Madden Football video game franchise. I watched a helluva lot of games with him in the 80s and 90s. Madden/Summerall- the Bears, 49ers, Giants, Cowboys, 60 Minutes, Murder she Wrote.... Great stuff. RIP

Madden/Summerall was the Platonic ideal of an NFL broadcast for me. I trust that’s more so due to when I started watching regularly, but nobody’s done it better in my lifetime.

You weren’t the game that week unless Summerall and Madden were doing it.

I confused him with John Candy when I was pretty young

I sometimes wonder if Madden and Summerall hit their stride just as the Bears started hitting theirs--or it it just seemed that way.

It was a little sad when the Bears started sucking, we either rarely heard them or heard them as the Bears were losing to Washington or someone in the playoffs

Don't forget that the Raiders were also often the 3pm CT AFC game on NBC in the 70s while Madden was coaching.

Football sound of my childhood and young adult years.

Heaven just got a little more BOOM to it today.

Pat Summerall and John Madden will always be the voices of the NFL to me. My introduction into pro football fandom coincided almost perfectly with their coming together as a team, and when I think of them calling a game I think NFC East, Chicago Bears, and the 49ers. When I think of Dick Enberg and Merlin Olson I think of late afternoon starts on the west coast, and that was great as well. For fun last night my son and I found an old Giants-Redskins game from '86, and it was a treat to listen to Summerall and Madden do their thing. It was the game where some pigeons landed on the field, and listening to him come back the pigeons between plays for the next few minutes was classic Madden, with Summerall chiming in now and then. It was perfect. Watching that old game was a real pleasure, I really miss those days of NFC football.
