Dumb question but for this and for the sites dedicated to collecting cash gifts for honeymoons, etc, why not just use a platform that doesn't deduct fees. I was recently involved in a wedding and when we realized a cash gift platform was deducting 3 bucks or whatever per gift we just made a collective Venmo account and had stuff transferred there.

Like most of you here just really saddened by the whole thing. The updates on the increasing cash contributions actually make me feel worse because everyone knows it can never replace having a parent.

Fucking genius.

I gotta agree with Bob on this one. That's a lot of money. They should probably cap it at some point and make sure someone they trust sets up that trust and the trustee.

I get worried when money like that gets to that level and is that public that people will take advantage.

EDIT - I agree that I hope the family has a guy. Not the GoFundMe stealing it.

Adam Schefter seems to be acknowledging larger donors. And he has a national following so his voice will help with the smaller ones.

I won't be surprised if some of the likely five figure donor types (the JJ Watt types) will just donate directly to a trust fund and skip the GoFundMe part.

I would guess a little higher.

Some CC companies get more then 2% themselves.

You do understand those platforms have operating costs, correct?

The best bet is to have a trust setup at a bank and big donors can just send the donation directly there

I’m guessing ESPN will provide the family with some Really.Smart.Lawyers ( automatically eliminating the ones who post here ) and or someone with trust experience will volunteer to handle things pro bono if they haven’t already.

I hope the kid has an opportunity to stay in the same school with the same group of friends. At least close by to see his friends. I just can't imagine.

Based on nothing but speculation I can see whoever the guardian is now would move into the home to cause as little disruption to the kid as possible. Sort of lost in this are 2 parents who have to bury their son as well. Just a horrifying situation.

Wow. It's at $690,000 dollars of donation money. That's amazing. It really is.

I just have a few questions about this.

1. Is that money taxed or is it considered a gift by the IRS

2. It's for the kid, doesn't somebody have to make sure it is put in a trust. Or at least explain that the money is being spent on him if needed? I don't know how that works.

3. I'm sure the Dickerson's are good people. But how the hell does this work? I'm just curious. I mean, they have to take out some of that money to support him before he's 18.

4. That's just an unreal amount of money raised in 24 hours.

5. Jeff had the benefit of being a public figure. Think about poor kids that lose their parents. Or any other tragedy. Those that aren't public figures. Don't have social media and the radio to get the message out for donations. And Jeff made decent money. Probably had life insurance. And probably has a family that has money. It just seems like there are more desperate people that need this kind of an unbelievable donation.

I know. Bad of me to say. But I think it's true.

Listened to Les' opening talk each hour from last night on Jeff Dickerson's passing on Audacy rewind. Not one mention of the GoFundMe page. I know Les has a no plugs policy.

As others have mentioned, this is particularly horrible due to the fact JD had to plan for his son being orphaned. Dion Miller was on one of the shows this morning and stated how he told her to set up living wills, trusts, etc. Of course, he knew his would be needed in the near future, where most of us assume those things will never be read.

As far as Go Fund Me goes, they suggest a “tip” at the end of your donation to defray their costs and provide the amount you desired to the cause.

I had followed JD on twitter, and it’s strange that his profile still exist although he doesn’t anymore. There are about five people on LinkedIn that I’m connected with that have died, and it’s weird to me there is no mechanism for their survivors to remove their profiles.

I agree that its a lot and somehow it should be capped, but its the credit card companies that are charging for the processing. To Bob's original quote, GoFundMe themselves gets $0 out of this. That is why whenever you donate to a Gofundme, something Bob has never done apparently, they tell you they are a 0% platform and ask for tips to help them cover expenses. I always add a couple bucks to help.

Edit; Oh, sorry Heis. I just saw you mentioned the tip thing as well.

$828,462 raised.

Amazing. A lot of big donations by famous sports people that didn't even know him. Very kind by so many.

Still no Chicago Sports Fanatics Message Board on the list. It's said that the Bears still couldn't beat the Packers.

it would have been absolutely hysterical if the Packers did just that.

I ordered a shirt, as well.

It ended up at over 1.1m. Looking at the list of $1000+ donors, there were some interesting entries. Of players current and recently retired, the three $5000 donors were Andy Dalton, Anthony Rizzo, and Josh McCown (well his wife, but still...).

I didn't see a lot of AM1000 hosts. Maybe some just gave cash on the side directly to the family.
