I like Herbert but he can’t be your main guy.

I know everyone thinks RBs are a dime a dozen these days but I’d keep Montgomery.

Why? He's a better runner, has better speed and far better vision. Neither are great at catching the ball.

Agree with Dr Ken

Patrick Scales is fine too.
Foles will be the #2 because of the contract.

Nope,he has 1 more year. We would save $1M if we cut him. It makes more sense to keep him.

Herbert can be elusive but he’s not proven.

Montgomery runs hard and wins those runs.

Hicks has to go. Too much money, too old, and never healthy enough. The need to find someone pretty decent to replace him though.

I had this in the game day thread.

A good GM could come in and build around this. Obviously Fields needs to be the future for anything to work over the next few years. But it is possible but highly improbable.

Yes, Montgomery runs hard and he's a great locker room guy, however, I like running backs that actually produce. The Bears have given Montgomery the ball over 60 times in the past 3 games. He's averaged less than 3 ypc in those games and he's averaging less than 4 ypc for the season.

He’s playing stacked defenses and he’s always moving forward.

I like him. Think of the last time he took a loss or looked indecisive.

You need those guys.

Montgomery has one year left on his contract, and his cap hit is only $1.2 million. The Bears would be crazy not to bring him back next year unless another team makes a really nice trade offer for him, which isn't going to happen.

That said, Montgomery is surprisingly ineffective given how hard he runs. Herbert clearly sees the field better than Montgomery, but he doesn't seem fast enough to be a feature back.

I don't know Doc, Herbert has faced the same defensive fronts because Fields has been awful. In his 4 games with at least 18 touches, Herbert has 344 yards at nearly 4.5 ypc. That's nearly half the rushing yards Montgomery has in 1/3 of the games. It's also nearly 1 ypc more than Montgomery.

Montgomery is a great team leader and he shows up every game. I love players in all sports like that. That isn't enough for me to make him my lead RB though. At the very least, it should be an open competition.

Yeah, it's too bad about Hicks' injury issues. He's still dominant when healthy--but he's just not healthy often enough to count on. What a great player he's been.

Fire Pace and Nagy, trade Fields to the Giants for the return of the Bears 2022 top 10 first round pick.

Package multiple first round/other round draft picks to Seattle for Russell Wilson.

Hire Pete Carroll and John Schneider to replace Pace and Nagy.

I don't think the market will pay him a significant amount of money. I think we can get him for 2 more years at a reasonable price. He also doesn't have to have the same workload. He gets teary-eyed when talking about possibly leaving Chicago.

Back to Montgomery.

Last point, I don’t think we will agree. When he’s in I think the D is keyed for run.

I just think he gets the tough yards. The stats may not look great. But I still like the eye test.

He definitely looks better than the story his stats tell about him. I see no reason why there can't be more of a balanced load between him and Herbert.

Nobody aside from Fields and Smith should be on the list.

Hicks will be a great situational pass rusher somewhere else next year, but never really has got himself into shape here and while he makes a few splash plays each game, he tires quickly and starts coming off the ball high which makes it easy for the o ine to stand him straight up and run the ball late in games.

Too bad Goldman has given up at football because you really will need a few defensive tackles that consistently show up next year, but the free agent list at that position looks thin, so will have to get creative, Jordan Davis would have been great there next year if we hadn't Paced things up and had to throw draft capital to shore up previous failures.

Could be an opportunity to significantly upgrade the interior of the Oline next year if they have the desire to invest cap room.

Kmet is just a guy his lack of speed and surprisingly small catch radius really limits him, turn the wasted Graham money into a vet and maybe Fields can develop a rapport with him, TE usage likely will increase exponentially under the next regime because Pace can't scout them and Nagy won't use them.

Montgomery's running style will lead to a short career, that said, backs are a dime a dozen and you just keep replacing them with mid to late round picks in the modern NFL. Also think the next coach will add a screen game and at least encourage Fields to check down to the backs more often, Montgomery usually gets a few yards after contact which would make him seemingly a good option for 3-5 yards each time he catches the ball.

The offensive players are difficult to evaluate under Nagy, guys he and Pace give reps to one year are out of the league next year, and very few of the offensive players they have picked have gotten second contracts. Cannot help but think that a new regime will likely have a much better success rate unless they bring in the Giants guy who seems to actually be worse at being a GM than Pace.

All that matters is if Fields can play. He had some moments this year, but the inability to hold onto the ball or stay healthy overshadow all of that.

There is more to the RB job than just rushing. Herbert isn't a three down back...yet. Montgomery will play out his contract and Herbert will be there to step in so they aren't held hostage. They will get a compensatory pick when someone else signs Monty to a big deal.

His nose earring bothers me.

Very true. Monty is much better at blocking and picking up blitzes than Herbert.

IF there was a legitimate competition for the job, there is no doubt in my mind Herbert would win it.

Kinda sorta maybe maybe not. Herbert is probably a better open field runner, and has that 'wow' factor to break a big run here and there. Montgomery is better in between the numbers and in passing situations. As TM said, a smart head coach would be able to utilize both backs to get the best out of each guy.
