John Madden always seemed older than he actually was for some reason. I'd have thought that he was mid 90's. He'd been around for so long.

He was in the league for 40 years straight since his early 30s and I think he only missed work like four or five times.

This was actually the case for Don Cherry as well. Everyone thought he must have been some champion of brutality because he was bigoted against the French, but he was always howling about how the glass and dashers are ridiculously unsafe and needed to be constructed better. Also, the people who hated him didn't like the French much themselves.

Until the late nineties, the chief selling point of the NFL, it's promoters and every broadcast partner promoted that to the hilt. I think that the only person ostracized was Jack Tatum. And now you have guys like Brady bitching and moaning about hits outside of a tiny area. It's changed the game for the inarguably worse imho.

Well, to be fair to Brady, he's mentioned more than once that the only reason he can still play at 44 is because the game is soft today.

I rarely initiate anything with the guy. But he seems to be there immediately after I post anywhere except basketball threads. I try to avoid him and most of the Covid and politics threads like the tired crap they are.

I also blame Emeril Lagasse for the violence in restaurant kitchens.

And I didn't realize that the NFL network is playing classic 1970s Oakland games. Between them and Pittsburgh, there's no way I wouldn't still be an AFC fan if I didn't live in NFC cities.

Those teams had all kinds of flavor and welcomed all comers.

And hated Dallas. :D

Years ago I worked at a school where Daryl Stingley came in to speak. It was surreal to watch him in his wheelchair and know that he was paralyzed from playing a sport.

Steelers will always be my second team. Had a helmet and jersey as a kid (as well as a sweet pirates gear collection) that my grandmother gave me. There are times I wonder if I had stayed out west I’d I could of converted to an AFC fan. It’s not so easy to switch but the move might of helped.

I was instilled very early in life with a dislike of Dallas as well. Reader might be a cousin is all I’m saying.

How can you forget the venerable George Blanda slinging TD passes at an even older age?

LT appeared to be sober for the Madden special. Madden looked fine, but I wonder if they gave him his flowers because he was sick. Either way, I enjoyed it.

I liked All Madden a lot but in the age of overblown bloated 8-episode miniseries structured for Netflix, how was this only basically a one-hour special? I would’ve liked to see more clips of his broadcasts.

I don't know if I mentioned this earlier. But ESPN did a podcast on the development of the Madden football game.

I thought it was very interesting. One of the guys was in that All Madden doc briefly.

I think this is it but I feel like there's a longer version out there somewhere -

https://30for30podcasts.com/episodes/maddens-game/

I remember it being longer.

I kinda wonder about that. On the CBS pregame, they really only showed the same clips as the Fox special. And they had access to the older/better All Madden shows I remember being can't miss.
