I think Lovie deserves his own thread for consideration. He was always an honorable coach and both a fan and player favorite.

If the Bears are going to be Bears again, they need to dip into the well and find what made them great before.

Let's go full meatball....The corpse of Buddy Ryan as DC, Wanny as the D-line coach, special guest Dan Fouts as the QB coach.

Ron Turner is by far the best offensive coordinator this team has had in the past 30 years.

That's more of an indictment of how bad the rest have been. Martz specifically. Turner was really good during the Wanny years. Maybe it was the personnel (Grossman) that hurt him more when he came back.

Holy shit, Ron Turner is only 68. I thought he was in his mid-70s. Let's bring him back and run the 1995 Erik Kramer offense!

Cannot argue Ron Turner. He was a good OC that made both Kyle Orton and Rex Grossman look decent. Ron Turner is the best on a long storied list of BAD offensive coordinators and offensive players.

They ran the ball well and Grossman was the best quarterback in the league for the first 6 weeks of the season.

I strongly believe that the Bears win the SB in 2006 IF they never draft Cedric Benson.

I thought I was the only person who believed this.

And Harris stays healthy. Everybody could see that Benson was not their best running back.

The Harris and Brown injuries really brought that team down. They didn't have the magic without those guys, though they were still very, very good.

Lovie, Ron Turner, let's bring all the old Illini coaches back. Put Lou Tepper at DC his last job was DC for the Bills.

Ron Zook has to be your GM. The guy can recruit.

John Mackovic is only 78. Tim Beckman can fill Gatorade bottles.

apparently tim beckman wasnt allowed to work for free

North Carolina
On August 24, 2016; Beckman was hired to serve as a volunteer assistant defensive coach for the North Carolina Tar Heels, working under head coach Larry Fedora. Beckman and Fedora have a working history together, having both served as assistant coaches on Mike Gundy's staff at Oklahoma State in 2007. However, after a firestorm of criticism, Beckman resigned from this position the next day, claiming he did not want to be a "distraction." It was later revealed that UNC chancellor Carol Folt had strongly objected to Beckman's presence, even in a volunteer role, once she learned about the arrangement.[9]

I can't imagine this defense trying to play a lot of Lovie's Tampa Two. Don't have the athletes at linebacker and secondary.

Lovie Smith was NOT a fan favorite. I recall MANY complaints:
*Poor clock management.
*Lacking da fire and da pashion. Not coachy enough. No sideline tantrums.
*His non-answers at press conferences driving Bernstein nuts.

Reasonably intelligent fans knew Lovie was a decent enough coach. I do think there's a lot to be said about his defensive philosophy getting aged and outdated. The game has always evolved like that. I'd also point out as Lovie assume some influence on personnel, it wasn't good. Adam Archuleta anyone?

Still....Lovie was a good coach that got a lot out of his players. Much of the struggles he faced were due to front office incompetence.

"Non-answers at Press conferences".....good. Same with Belichick. Fuck the media. Ask stupid questions, you get stupid answers. Most pre and post-game press conferences are a waste of everyone's time.

Fans wanted more out of Lovie at the end, but it wasn't his fault that Cutler didn't give two fuc$$. The problems were always on the offensive side.

Lacking da fire and da pashion? Lovie was/is a humble soul. He spoke softly but carried a big stick.

Lovie was kind of like Phil Jackson, not a rah rah guy at all. More like a Zen Master who got the most out of the players.

If he drove Bernstein nuts, good for him.

Lovie getting some respect for his work in Houston.

https://sports.yahoo.com/happens-lovie- ... 50425.html

Quote:
What happens to Lovie Smith as the Texans’ defensive coordinator?

The Houston Texans fired coach David Culley on Thursday. Houston also parted ways with offensive coordinator Tim Kelly.

Perhaps it was time for Culley to go. The Texans went on an eight-game losing streak and posted a 4-13 record with veteran players getting disciplined along the way. Houston also had questionable in-game adjustments and decisions that contributed to the Texans’ double-digit losses, the second consecutive season this has been the case since 2005-06.

Maybe it was time for Kelly to go. He was kind of the odd duck as he was a holdover from the Bill O’Brien era, and not just in the way Bobby King was as a former inside linebackers coach. Kelly was one of O’Brien’s former lieutenants and had connections with O’Brien going back to the 2012 Penn State Nittany Lions.

With the Texans getting rid of Culley, what does it mean for the future of defensive coordinator Lovie Smith?

On Smith’s own merits, he deserves to stay. The Texans, after posting nine takeaways through 16 games in 2020, finished in the top-10 in turnovers with 25. The Texans finished as the only team with a losing record in the top-10, and one of four teams in the top-10 to have not qualified for the playoffs. Smith preached turnovers, and the defense repented.

If the Texans go with an offensive-minded coach, then Smith is more than likely safe. If it isn’t malfunctioning, why commence with extraneous upgrades?

However, if the Texans decide to go with a defensive-minded coach, as could be the case if Houston brings in former Miami Dolphins coach Brian Flores or gives New England Patriots inside linebackers coach Jerod Mayo a chance, they may not have the same philosophy as Smith, whose doctrine has been nothing but the Tampa 2.

As the Texans go forward, they will need to consider Smith met his objectives with minimal talent and is deserving staying in Houston. The new coach may not agree, and that could be the 2022 team’s first conflict they must manage to successful complete the rebuild.

I'm not saying I agree with any of that. Rather just calling out the fact that Lovie was not universally loved.

And I have never been concerned with what coaches say at press conferences. Regardless they often get eviscerated, especially when they are loosing.

Why don't they just give him the job. Hiring a D minded guy seems redundant. And Flores seems incapable of finding the right guys at the coach and personnel level on offense anyway, which is what doomed lovie
