If they want an accountant to run the organization, I'm willing to consider it.

Where do I send my CV?

Funny you mention...while I was looking at the names at the Bears front office, I noticed one particular direct report of Ted Phillips is someone I went to HS with and ran across at a corporate job years ago. He's a good guy and very bright....Finance background.

At least now I can say at least 1 person in the front office isn't a dope....but he wouldn't have anything to do with football matters.

My Mom's first cousin, Ruth Hughes, was George Halas' personal secretary for decades. He left her $150k in his will but it was contested that she should only receive $25k (link).

https://www.chicagotribune.com/news/ct- ... story.html

Ever since I heard that story as a kid, I picture that whole generation of McCaskeys as being in a glass box with wind blowing money around and grabbing as much as they can.

And that's $150k in the early '80s. So about half-million today.

Doesn't do Ruth a lot of good.

She did get a manhole cover.

Kind of a slight to Halas. That's a lot of money to give your assistant. I think he just realized before most that football players have limited useful professional lives.

I think that article really lays out what that family is.

GD posted a few days ago somewhere why wouldn't one of them commit their career to take it over. That family was in turmoil since the day Halas died and it never ended.

That...family...is...fucked...up.

Starting from the '80s. I am familiar with family business. Not $3billion business. So, I can't imagine the turmoil they've been dealing with since the mid-'80s. It just gets worse over time and we are almost 40 years into it.

The one family business I do know about were club members with Michael McCaskey.

That Old Man Potter signature I had.......had an inspiration.

It's kind of weird how much close-contact I've had with the Halas and McCaskey families throughout my whole life as a kid from a farm in LaSalle County.

Is there a vaccine for that?

The defense had that vibe from time to time.

Not so much from any other part of team.

Club Dub? No

If someone in Club Dub threw a chair across the room and stuck it in the wall, I’d concede they had the pashun. And that fire.

Yeah, great throw rolling to the left for the TD! I believe Bernstein says that McMahon wouldn't excel in today's game, but I am convinced he would be really good. Talk about a high football IQ--that guy had one.

Yeah he would have been just fine. He was a much better QB than many believe. He did not need to be good with that team. Hand it to Payton and let the defense do their thing. But he could have done well in a more passing oriented offense

Watching that video led me down a path of watching some old clips.

Here is a good clip of McMahon and Ditka and even includes a few shots at Harbaugh being a kiss ass to McCaskey

That’s why people that didn’t watch McMahon play don’t understand.

He could do anything. Drop back. Scramble before it was cool. Throw on the run.

He just didn’t often need to because nobody could score. But when they needed it….done.

They led the NFL in points scored. I think it was a league record.

Wow that is quite the article and really gives some insight into what a clusterfuck the family is. They definitely did not like Michael.

It has always been hard for me to understand why families fight over things that seem so clear. I mean Papa Bear clearly wanted that secretary to have some money, so why wouldnt they want to honor his wishes when he dies. Such pettiness.

Truth.

The OL and RB group was so good, there was almost no reason to throw the ball. When they did, he got the job done.

I get that the family business isn't for everyone but you figure with 8 children, 20+ grandchildren and now grandchildren coming of age, one would be interested in football...or, literally a billion dollars.

That family seems so easily dominated. One strong personality could rule the entire thing. How weak are those genes when there isn't one alpha in the entire group?

Based on the old Trib article the takeaway may be that George is the alpha.

He’s also apparently unafraid of berating several large professional athletes over ticket procedure.

Ditka was overrated.

I dont think that is the right way to say it. He got distracted towards the end of his run with fame and being the center of attention. But he was really good the first few years. He made all the right decisions. Obviously Buddy Ryan and the defense were crucial, but Ditka was the right person to lead the ship and get everyone going in the same direction.

I am sure there are exceptions, but the best owners, the ones who win multiple championships, almost all built business from either medium sized businesses or from scratch. The Rooneys in Pittsburgh are hard to classify given the success of the Steelers came from the second generation who took over at the very start of the NFL becoming a big business.

The Mara-Tisch combined family ownership is probably the gold standard for success by second and third generation owners in modern sports.
