I Don't think I'm being overly dramatic.

I'll admit, I haven't been around for all 100 + years of White Sox baseball. I don't think the Sox were in a situation like this in the 50s, 60s, or 70s. Yankees always won in the 50s and 60s. Sox had some good teams back then. Don't know think they needed a game, this late, against their closest competitor, with a 1/2 game lead. I know Sox history to that point. If there was a similar situation, before the 1950s, then somebody correct me.

Certainly the biggest in my life time. I've been following since the late 1980s. 1/2 game up, with 4 to play (maybe 5), againt the team that is behind you. Can't get much bigger.

Keep in mind, for the longest time, MLB had 2 Leagues. No divisions. The winner of the AL/NL went to the World Series. There were no playoffs. You played 162 for the right to go to the World Series. This changed in the late 1960s. They went to 2 division per league at that point. Now we have 3 divisions and a Wild Card team.

They are still in first place. Still playing meaningful games in late September. Nobody can say it's boring. Nerve racking yes, boring NO!

The biggest game is probably yet to come.

This was certainly the biggest series in a long, long time. Seems like Buehrle and Griffey are the only ones that showed up with any real killer instinct.

Really? Give me a bigger game that you can remember. Especially considering what we have here. You can't say that to me without telling me of a bigger game.

We have the Sox and the team right behind them. Sox are 1/2 game up. You have a 2 game swing on the line tonight. There are 3 or 4 games left after tonight.

Even if they lose tonight, they still control their own destiny, so I'm not sure it's the biggest. Now, could they win the 5 games in a row if they had to????, but technically they would still be in control.

If it's their destiny, how do they control it?

It's not that there can't be a bigger game. Obviously game 162 with a tie between Twins and Sox and them playing each other would be bigger. Or a one game playoff on game 163 would be bigger.

Sox haven't had any of those in their history. That's all I'm saying. It's the biggest for the Sox ever. If they lose tonight the next games will be a little bigger or equal until the elimination game. But you have them playing the 2nd place team right now. Don't have to rely on others beating them like you will in the next series.

The Friday night game against the hard charging Indians at home in September of 2005.

That was a big game Dolphin. Not as big as this one. Indians were never as close as a 1/2 game (I think it was 1.5 at that point. Maybe 2.5). We had more than 3 games after that one. Little less pressure cuz you had more games to work with and a bigger lead at that point. Try again. You won't find one. This is the biggest.

That Indians series was a mid week series. iirc, they had 4 game series against the Twins and @Tigers after that. Dropped the 1st and 3rd game of the Indians set, dropped game 1 of the Twins series, then took the next 3, dropped the first 2 in Detroit, before winning the final 2 and clinching at Comerica.

So they had 11 games after that Indians series in '05, and the closest Cleveland got was 1.5 games, not a mere half game

Let's simplify this - the game is very important. Win, and they probably go to the playoffs. Lose, and it's 50/50 at best.

I think he was referring to the final series of the year against the Indians. The Sox had a 3 game lead with 3 to play against Cleveland. The first game was on a Friday and was the clincher.

I think this is too early to define this game as the biggest ever. I think that needs to be reserved for when we actually know the outcome of this season.

For example, if we do win tonight and then ultimately win the World Series, I would say that this was the biggest game.

This game has nothing to do with winning the World Series. I said it's the biggest "regular season" game. What happens in the playoffs, if we make it, won't change the significance of this game.

Man, I didn't think this was that outrageous of a statement. It's pretty clear. I don't how anybody can disagree.

Sox have had a shitty history. Not too many big games in late September. The 1983, 1993, and 2000 division titles were easier than this race. 1959 race wasn't this close at the end. We didn't have a bigger game in those years. 2005 was close. Never got to a 1/2 game with this few games left.

Don't you guys get what I'm saying? Jeez.

The Sox clinched the '05 Central on a Thursday afternoon in Detroit. I remember ditching a history class and watching it on MLBTV. The series @Cleveland meant nothing for the Sox, and everything for the Indians.

Right, but that was the game he was referring to.

If thats the game in question, how is that a big game? Sox had already clinched the division, and homefield at that point I believe. That was just a tune up for October.

I get Beardown's point. Its hard to judge the biggest regular season game ever, but this is certainly up there, and without question the biggest in recent years.

Of course it wasn't big because it wasn't the clinching game...but I assumed he thought it was which is why I said that. Maybe I'm wrong but I thought that was the only Friday game the Sox played against Cleveland in September.

I don't give a shit if it's the "biggest" or 2nd biggest or where it ranks...they need to win.

There normally seems to be cynicism for these type of comments, getting too wrapped up in the here and now.
But, I agree with Beardown in this case. I just don't remember another regular-season game -- up to this point -- that had the same type of emotional dynamics.

Hey, maybe the 1906 White Sox had a bigger game in late Septmember. Or at least equal. That team beat the Cubs in the World Series.

Maybe, in 1917, the Sox had a bigger game. Maybe the illiterate SOB - Shoeless Joe - came up big in an important game in September to put the Sox in the World Series. Maybe there was a bigger game for the 1919 Black Sox to get into the World Series before they laid down.

But certainly this is the biggest "regular season" Sox game in the "modern era" of baseball.

The game that decides whether the Sox WILL be or WILL NOT be going to the post-season is the biggest game this regular season. This is not that game. So I guess when that game comes up we can call it the biggester or biggestest game, right?

True. There could be bigger games. If we lose there will be. If we win, the first game against the Indians won't be as big cuz we'll have a 1.5 game lead. If it gets back to 1/2 game lead or an elimination game it will be bigger than this.

I'm just saying to this point it is the biggest in Sox history. Could be topped as we go along here.

Ok. Even I'm sick of discussing this. I'm done. I've made my points. Didn't think it would be debated like this.

Big game tonight. Gotta win.

I think the discussion deals with contests up to this point.

Not true. Tonight's game hasn't been played yet and neither have the games following tonight's game.

It was only made a "shit thread" by people who said I was wrong. I was just making a factual point that shouldn't be disputed.
