Yes this 100 percent. They use to keep showing us Butkus, Ernie Banks, and countless others who never won a championship in Chicago. Ditka and the Bears finally broke that 'curse'.

btw- Der Sting won the Soccer Bowl championship in 81 but I guess that doesn't count.


Was Karl Heinz Granizka on that team? I remember his name from nightly news.

Yes he was on that team and also the 84 championship.

They then moved into the Indoor soccer league which I forget the name of. I actually enjoyed indoor soccer.

how can you not like indoor soccer? it was like a coked up retirement league for european football-proper stars of the 70s, and some of the fringier guys like ray hudson stuck around fell in love with swampy ass florida and truly became legend!

While it is true Ditka never won a Super Bowl without Ryan, lets remember Ryan never won a single playoff game without Ditka, either as a defensive coordinator or head coach (I believe he was 0-6).

It's been said earlier but it is true that the QB position killed the Bears. The only year McMahon went into the playoffs healthy was '85. He missed the '84 and '86 playoffs and missed a month before starting in the '87 playoff loss and missed a little more than two months before starting the '88 NFC Championship loss. It's hard to win when its Fuller vs. Thiesmann or Montana. Or Flutie vs Schroeder( who did throw for over 4000 yards in '86). Or a banged up Mcmahon vs Doug Williams or Montana.

I blame Ditka for the hubris of thinking they could plug in any QB and the offense would work...like Tomczak being a free agent and Flutie was a midseason pickup. Once the Bears lost confidence in Fuller they should have traded for a veteran QB. The Redskins picked up Williams before '86 and the 49ers picked up Young '87. The Bears instead drafted Harbaugh, who wouldn't be ready until the Bears championship window closed.

I think Ditka's playoff record speaks volumes. Against, Parcells, Gibbs, Walsh and Johnson 2-6. Against Robinson, Berry, Ryan and Mora 4-0
