Would that change anything if it's not about the money?

I don't think Harbaugh flirting with the NFL is about the $$$. Michigan already has
a fat extension on the table. Reportedly Harbaugh's more concerned about getting institutional support for NIL and
beefing up his assistants pay and number of hires.

Regarding the Bruce Feldman report that Harbaugh would take the Las Vegas job. It's on the Athletic's site. It's a crap report that by the end refutes itself. Harbaugh traded in the courtesy rides he and his wife get from a local dealer last week for new ones and he recently hired that Notre Dame coordinator to be his D-Line coach. That doesn't sound like a guy about to peace out for the NFL.

It's not about money but he has a big extension waiting for him at Michigan if he stays?

He may choose Michigan for similar money but he clearly wants to be paid like a top college coach.

His report is he spoke to Harbaugh but didn't ask him about the Bears or his future in coaching. Hub also spoke with a very reliable source that told him the Bears calling Harbaugh and had a brief conversation with him.

And now Hub is mad at Daniel Greenberg for repeating his statement that Harbaugh and the Bears have been in contact with each other.

If it's not news, why report it as if it's news?

Hub is once again playing the role of the backtracking buffoon to the hilt.

Agreed. He's acting as if someone tweeted something that he shared with them in private.

Wherever Harbaugh goes he wants to have a chance compete for a championship. If he stays at Michigan he wants institutional support for programs and staff that'll at least put Michigan on the same level in those areas as SEC schools/Ohio State. So Michigan offering Harbaugh top $$$ in salary alone but not coming through in the other areas presumably would not be enough to keep Harbaugh at Michigan vs a tempting NFL offer. Similarly if he goes NFL he'd prefer to go into a situation where he has the greatest autonomy and say over personnel -- going to the Raiders and only having to answer directly to his buddy Mark Davis would be preferable to signing up for having multiple layers of GMs and EVPs and McCaskey kids above him at Chicago.

Once again though, the flaw in your argument is he will NEVER get that at Michigan. 0% chance. Michigan isn't LSU and Alabama. It's not even Ohio State. Notre Dame has the same issue.

It's like saying that the coach at Illinois wants to have an equal playing field to the SEC schools and Ohio State.

It's about money, and likely an equal choice of getting $10 million from the Raiders or around that at Michigan so they can keep up with MSU.

We really just have to hope that a good result can come from a bad process. Getting this correct will be nothing more than dumb luck.

George and Ted admit they are unqualified to conduct the search on their own but they will hire a HC before their GM candidate can tell them they are wrong.

No one has hired anyone yet, including the Jaguars. I'm comfortable letting the process play out. There isn't an establishment or proven guy that is being hired or will be hired (if Harbaugh stays). It's going to take a little luck for any team to get their hire right.

Omg it is true.

Bears: hi, what is your favorite color?

Candidate: uh, blue

Bears: sorry. Were looking for smelly brown

Candidate: what?

If Eberflus or Caldwelll is selected as head coach, who will be the defensive coordinator?

Eberflus has connections to the Cover 2 and Marinelli.

Caldwelll has connections to Dungy and the Cover 2.

Lovie Smith will likely be available, though the Texans haven't let him go just yet.

Is his return to Chicago imminent?

 that would be pretty crazy to get Lovie back.

Well not ideal with this roster, but you could do a lot worse.

They can't really switch back to 4-3 with our personnel, can they?

Definitely. I suspect that Fangio will have many offers, though, including from John Harbaugh in Baltimore. I can't imagine that returning to the Bears would be a very attractive option for him.

Correct. Neither Fangio or Lovie Smith are going to crawl back to the Bears. There's also the reality they will probably get paid more going somewhere else like Baltimore, potentially Dallas, SF, or Indy will open up. All better jobs to boot. Should add Fangio won't go to Baltimore after he rightly criticized Harbaugh earlier in the year but he'll have no trouble getting a highly paid dc job elsewhere.

I'll be shocked if Fangio goes to Baltimore.

All of Harbaugh's DC's have been big on blitz packages. Fangio has never been that guy.

Fangio LITERALLY coached in Baltimore for two years, under head coach John Harbaugh.

And he was never the defensive coordinator.

I love Fangio. I'm happy to be wrong if he is hired.

"We refuse to hire the most successful defensive coordinator in the NFL because he doesn't blitz frequently enough."

Differing philosophies are often the reasons why coaches don't get hired.

Hope that's helpful for you.

I'm skeptical that philosophical rigidity would keep Harbaugh from hiring the best defensive coordinator in the NFL. Personal differences might be another story.

I would think that Harbaugh may be tired of the high risk defenses that they have been running for years now.
