Interesting how Dave Winfield and Reggie Jackson are right next to each other. I remember this famous quote from Steinbrenner: "I let Mr. October get away, and I got Mr. May, Dave Winfield. He gets his numbers when it doesn't count."

Yeah, he shouldn't be that much higher than Scherzer.

 Jeter at 28. What farce.

Great player don't get me wrong, but on no planet can you say that Jeter was better than Frank Thomas, Tris Speaker, Ichiro, Bob Feller. I'm not sure he was better than Ryne or Cal Jr.

considering he's only 17th among pitchers for JORR's preferred metric WAR and the ESPN list combines position players and pitchers, Pedro's 11th while Bob Gibson down at 33 when they had nearly identical WAR (Pedro pitched 18 seasons to Gibson's 17):

Top 100 pitchers by WAR all time

Top 100 position players by WAR

Trout at 15 seems too high for a guy who most people couldn't pick out of a lineup.

Barry Bonds is the best player of our time and I put him arguably there right next to Ruth.

Was about to post the same thing. The only argument against bonds at #1 is steroids but that’d invite a discussion of all the competitive issues with every other era.

First of all, it's ridiculous to have pitchers and position players in the same list.

Barry Bonds should be 2nd on the list.
Albert Pujols at 30 is too generous.
Pedro is NOT higher than Greg Maddux and you can put Pedro and Clemens well behind Tom Seaver and Randy Johnson while you're at it.

This list sucks.

There is a lot to pick apart for sure.

I'll say this though. Its hard not to argue with the players in the top ten. Maybe they could be ranked differently, but I would be hard pressed to replace any of these guys in the top ten;
Quote:
10. Stan Musial
9. Walter Johnson
8. Barry Bonds
7. Mickey Mantle
6. Lou Gehrig
5. Ted Williams
4. Ty Cobb
3. Hank Aaron
2. Willie Mays
1. Babe Ruth

It's a damn shame that they can't end a lockout and the biggest news of the game is yet another list.

They’re exhausted after having met once for 30 minutes in the past two months.

Because he is a 20.4 WAR player.

As a pitcher.

Because he accomplished things that no one will come close to accomplishing. Everyone else is playing for that 2nd spot behind him.

At their peak, one game to win- give me Pedro over Maddux. But looking at their overall career, Maddux over Pedro.

This is the reason why I always think Hank Aaron is ranked too high on these list. Peak Hank Aaron isn't a top 5 player. Peak Pedro was a top 5 pitcher

vlad 77? 77? he's gotta be better than wade boggs (~45) because boggs is just a .330 career average and vlad is .318 with all kinds of power and danger that boggs never had. you can argue that vlad was generally shit in the playoffs but what kind of a dent did wade fucking boggs make in the playoffs? maybe when he was a devil ray?

jeter #26 vlad #77? #comeonson. this is a popularity contest.

This is just wrong. Hank was a great five tool player. And wildly underappreciated because he wasn't a self promoter playing in the Jim Crow South.

Great as a pitcher, great hitter, changed the way baseball was played after the Black Sox scandal. Most well-known athlete before Ali.

Di Maggio in at #10 over Musial.

Also, the name of this list should be changed from Top MLB to Top Baseball players since Josh Gibson and Oscar Charleston never played in the MLB.

Career / Body of work matters. Pedro was all that for a limited number of seasons, but I think this list pertains to career numbers.
