Before the Bears decided on their GM and HC choices, I wrote Virginia and George McCaskey a letter that I sent to Hallas Hall, trying to persuade them to consider Lovie Smith again as HC.

I received a response from George today in the mail. Nice of him to have responded. This is what he wrote:

"Thank you for your letter of Jan. 15 to Virginia McCaskey and me. We appreciate your interest in the Bears are are grateful that you are a long-time fan.

Lovie Smith is an outstanding person and an outstanding coach. I think you will see many of his qualities in Matt Eberflus. Matt's intensity and passion for our great game will be reflected in the play of your Bears. We're excited to see it.

Bear Down,

George H. McCaskey".

Lovie would work if he gets Briggs, Tillman and Urlacher back in their primes.

I don't spend a lot of time on twitter but Tillman shared a video of prime Lovie Bear's defense swarming a tackle against the Vikings. Little different than the ball on the ground that no one picked up vs Packers but I had almost forgotten how many guys were always moving towards to ball carrier on those early Smith teams.

If this is true, it is pretty cool on Georges part to write you back and even mention things about what you wrote about. I doubt many NFL owners would do something like that

I hate George a little less after this hiring cycle. He seems to genuinely want to do well and it’s kind of hard to fault him for not having the wherewithal to do so. Seems like people who know him universally regard him as a decent human being (save for Olin of course).

You guys realize that this letter was written by George's secretary, right?

He could’ve not responded to the letter and it wouldn’t change my post.

I guess so, but your post would still be misguided since it's quite easy to fault George for his insistence on doing a job he has repeatedly failed at.

Well the post calls him a well meaning idiot, so…

I'm thinking that George really wrote that.

On the other hand if you have a Walter Payton signed anything and you didn't actually see him sign it, then think secretary.
