A lot of unanswered questions amid one of the most enjoyable NFL off seasons in recent memory.

Interesting that Poles is taking the approach that I mentioned.

When I asked Poles if he feels like he's done enough to help Justin Fields, the GM made it very clear that he feels like the offensive scheme and coaching staff will help the QB.

"I see Justin getting better."

Well if his plan is to possibly look for a new QB in '23 then it would make sense to tank this year and have a high draft pick.

I don't like that plan, but I can see where a new GM would be thinking that way.

I have no problem with him keeping that option open in the event that Fields sucks. I don't suspect that he believes that Fields will suck. Fields is one of the 3 or 4 players that he believes he can build the team around.

Forget even if Fields sucks, what if he suffers a devastating knee or arm injury? You always have to have a contingency plan in case he ends up with a Wendell Davis type of injury.

I never liked Pace, wasnt he more front and center in year one? He knew he blew it with Mitch by his second year..Watson and Mahomes were looking great.

Agreed. Fields had far too many injuries last year. Getting his body ready for NFL contact is one of the MANY things Fields has to do this offseason.

He is clearing up cap space and praying Fields is the man, he isnt a fool though, he has to have a plan b if Fields cant get it done.

According to Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune, the Bears’ offer was a four-year deal worth $17 million. The first two years — $8.8 million — are fully guaranteed. Now, Bates will get that same deal from the Bills, who matched Chicago’s offer.

I'm trying to be patient.

I know the draft is now weeks away. I also know that, post draft, there are always guys who get cut who can still play at a high level.

However, he has screwed up his two signature moves.

Yeah it’s a very alarming start.

Yeah it’s a very alarming start.

Allowing Foles to collect a $4 million roster bonus also seems like a pretty big blunder since that money could have been used to front load the Bates offer or increase the offer to Brian Allen. Releasing Foles prior to March 21 would have cleared $7 million in cap space.

They can likely pick up some vets to fill spots, but draft picks and a significant amount of UDFA's will by necessity receive significant playing time.

Why they are worrying about the backup QB position at all puzzles me.

His media comments aren’t helping either. Don’t advertise if you don’t like the talent on the offensive line. Nothing to be gained from that. Jenkins and Borom are valuable guys. Even if you don’t like them talk them up.

You considered Bates a signature move? It appears that the Bills were going to match that deal unless a team drastically overpaid for him.

Getting draft capital for Mack was by far his signature move. The optics of the Ogunjobi deal was bad, but I'm not sure it really matters.

They’re going to suck - I think that was likely no matter what they did these past couple weeks - but it is a weird spot where:

- everybody of consequence is a first timer
- the most notable move was bungled, even if it wasn’t wholly on Poles
- they haven’t addressed obvious gaps yet
- they created more holes in the roster by letting some guys walk
- we’re now in a spot where these first timers will have to hit on both lesser free agents & draft picks if they’re going to be serviceable across several position groups

Effectively they need everything to go well and maybe they’ll be an average team. Anything’s off and they’re brutally bad/inhibit Fields’ development (assuming he doesn’t suck)

This seems like a 3-4yr rebuild at this point

Maybe. Didn't most of us believe that Nagy's system was a major problem?

I would feel better about the "system" making Fields better if they didn't hire a defensive head coach and pair him with an offensive coordinator who has never called players, ever, at any level.

Maybe. Didn't most of us believe that Nagy's system was a major problem?

Yup. Making the roster worse is also a problem.

I'm not sure that the offensive talent has gotten worse. Was Allen Robinson better than Byron Pringle last year? Getting Mustipher out of the lineup is HUGE. There is still a hole at guard, but they'll fill it by drafting a tackle/guard or signing someone who got cut.

I believe that a system tailored for Fields and the running backs will make the offense dramatically better.

It Poles is committed to Fields for 2023, then it doesn't matter if the Bears don't pick up a number 1 WR or improve their Oline significantly this season. If 2022 is simply about installing an offense system that Fields is comfortable in and fixing his throwing mechanics, then Poles has a solid plan. 2023 with all of the cap room and a first round pick will be about putting major pieces around Fields and taking the next steps towards a playoff/division winning team.

If though, 2022 is at all about evaluating Fields as a starting QB going forward, Poles hasn't done much yet to help his QB. But, we still have the rest of FA and the draft to see what happens.

The 2023 QB draft class is supposed to be a good to great one. If the Bears are 5-12 bad and have a top 6 pick, does Poles jettison Fields in lieu of his own guy?

A lot of unanswered questions amid one of the most enjoyable NFL off seasons in recent memory.

Interesting that Poles is taking the approach that I mentioned.

When I asked Poles if he feels like he's done enough to help Justin Fields, the GM made it very clear that he feels like the offensive scheme and coaching staff will help the QB.

"I see Justin getting better."

This is an ultimatum veiled as misplaced overconfidence.

As of right now, the offensive talent is worse than last year. We'll see how this plays out. Poles isn't off to a great start, so there's no reason to assume he's going to hit home runs in the draft and the next round of free agency.

Part of me thinks Fields will actually be better without Robinson, in an addition-by-subtraction kind of way. But they also clearly need a #1. Mooney is not it.
