I bet they would have been better if the game started at 7:05.

I was playing raquetball and only saw about 3 innings or so of this game, but observed this:

-Manny is something else
-The crowd was a non factor. Not that they had a ton to cheer about, but they seemed more worried than amped up
-Thie Cubs looked very tense and nervous, almost like they were playing not to lose
-Lou looked like a wreck in the postgame conference just now
-Its just one game. Yeah, captain obvious will tell you how big tommorow's game is, but cross that "down 0-2 and heading out to LA" bridge if and when you get to it

Its my place wherever I dammed well want it to be on this messsage board, and its comments like this that will make me rub salt in the wounds.

My previous post was 100% observation and fact. Nothing implied nor opinionated about it.

256 post in 6 days is impressive, that is City of Fools pace.

Back to the game, after watching the press conference with Lou, they are done already.

OK, here's what I drew out of it:

Bad hitting, but Lowe can do that to you. Lots of hard-hit balls just didn't fall, and no real "bloop" type hits did. That's not to excuse the hitting. It was bad. Soriano looked awful. Soto had a few awful at bats. Raimrez as well. Theriot looks kinda lost right now, although he did put a good lick on the ball in the 9th. Fukodome had a better night than his stats are going to show with a really hard hit ball for an error and a sharply hit groundout.

The strike zone was peculiar, to say the least tonight, although I think that if the strike zone was the size of Kentucky, Dempster would have consistently thrown the ball to Cincinatti. Both pitchers seemed flummoxed, and the zone seemed to be something like a triangle that extended really, really low in the center of the plate and had little coverage on the corners.

The statistic about 24 of 28 teams winning after winning the first game is interesting, but not as important I think in this situation. The cubs don't have a real ace; they have three pitchers who are all solid, dependable types that would comfortably fit as #2's on really great teams. That makes game one's less essential than they might be, because you don't go into games two and three knowing you'll be getting a huge dropoff in production.

I say that, of course, with one caveat. No one knows which Zambrano is going to show up. If it's good Zambrano, they'll win. If it's bad Zambrano, they'll probably lose. I don't have a ton of faith in Zambrano this postseason in general, but I actually do going into tomorrow; I think that most of the problems he's had over the past 2+ months stem from the shoulder soreness he's experienced, and his effectiveness has been almost directly correlated to the amount of rest between starts. He'll be going with 7 days off.

Game three looks like a big mismatch in favor of the Cubs, despite the game being in Los Angeles. Game four is interesting, but I think Torre tipped his hand tonight by bringing in Maddux; he'll be bringing in Lowe to start game four and Billingsley once again in game five, if necessary. I'm 100% certain he'll do this if the Cubs win the next two and 90% certain he'll do this if the Dodgers are up 2-1. Either way, the Dodgers are kinda in a weird position. Lilly v. Maddux is a mismatch. But do you bring back Lowe on three days rest?

Just my two cents.

I don't really disagree with any of that except I don't think the Cubs were so much tense as they were trying to do too much in each AB, like last year.
