(670 The Score) A mayoral committee is set to recommend that the city explore the feasibility of constructing a dome atop Soldier Field, Chicago Crain’s Business reported Tuesday night.

The move would be part of the city’s hope to entice the Bears to remain at Soldier Field as the organization has taken serious steps toward moving to northwest Arlington Heights. The Bears signed a purchase sale agreement with Churchill Downs Incorporated last September to acquire 326-acre Arlington Park. While nothing is finalized on that front, the Bears continue to explore the potential of the property and the possibility of building their own state-of-the-art stadium there.

Putting a dome over Soldier Field would almost certainly require a taxpayer subsidy, said a draft of a report that Chicago Crain’s Business obtained. That cost to taxpayers has early estimates of $400 million to $1.5 billion, Crain’s Business reported.

The city panel has also proposed other upgrades at Soldier Field, such as rebuilding parts of the stadium, Crain's Business reported.

The Bears haven’t discussed a dome or other upgrades at Soldier Field with the mayor’s office, a team spokesman told Crain’s Business. The organization remains focused on continuing to explore and move forward with the Arlington Park property.

Closing on the Arlington Park property is expected to take until the end of 2022 or into early 2023, the Bears previously said. In January, chairman George McCaskey shed further light on that topic.

“The best way to explain it is anybody who has bought a house or a lot to build a house, there’s a time between when the property is under contract and closing,” McCaskey said. “And during that time, there are things that need to done in terms of due diligence – making sure that there is a clear title to the house or lot. If it’s a lot, determining whether it’s a build-able lot and so forth. A lot of regulations that need to be checked out. Well, on a property of this size, that time between contract and closing is vastly expanded. There’s a lot of due diligence that needs to be performed before we can before we can close.”

The Bears are under contract to lease Soldier Field from the Chicago Park District through 2033, but it’s an agreement that could be broken with a penalty. The Bears’ penalty for breaking the lease would start at $84 million in 2026, the Chicago Tribune has reported.

Seems like it took a long time to "recommend" a study. This sounds like they know they are gone and want to be able to say "We tried. We did a study".

$84 million may not be significant in the context of the money we're talking about here. For the record, I believe that if the Bears back out of the deal with CDI at this point it will cost them $25 million. Again, I'm not sure how much of a commitment $25 million really is.

WTH would they do? Just put a big canopy type thing over it like in LA? They would still have the seating capacity problem as well as all the other negatives.

The stadium is ugly, out of date, and a pain in the butt walking a mile away to park. If they move they will have top of the line everything. It's a no brainer.

Yep! It would still be done before ground is broken in Arlington Heights.

Hmmm...we keep hearing the Bears would have to pay what essentially amounts to a nominal fee to break the final years of the Soldier Field deal. I'd love to see Lightfoot tell the Bears the city is breaking it and the Bears can play in Champaign or somewhere else until the Arlington Stadium is built. Fuck the McCaskeys.

Why are the Bears the bad guys in this? They are seemingly putting up their own collateral to build a private stadium that will be light years better than what they play in now and in a more logical spot besides the fact that it is the Chicago suburbs and not the city of Chicago and the city government seems happy to see them go.

yeah, whenever they drafted that penalty clause, they should've x5'd it, if they really wanted a chance
at it keeping the Bears at Soldier Field. $84 mil will be a single season starting QB salary in 2026. Not nothing, but not anything that's going to keep the Bears in place.

Can we place the dome over the Tv cameras so no one is able to watch this abomination of a roster.

The thing is the Bears were very kind to the city of Chicago in all previous negotiations. If the city pushed too hard they would have too.

Just look at what the Irsay clan got from Indianapolis. They literally paid them just for letting the Final Four be played in a stadium they didn't own. They turned the Irsay family into billionaires. The Bears were just like "Can we have some skyboxes in the smallest stadium in the NFL?".

They were pretty limited on what they could do with Soldier Field. That's one of the reasons for this move. Too bad for the fans but that's the PSL game. I would hope they would give them some sort of relief for loyalty.

PSLs are a scam in general, and they are not unique to the Bears.

McCaskey's should offer 1 (one) free share of Bears stock to any season ticket holder who doesn't wish to renew at Arlington.

Yeah, BRick is right here.
The Bears suck as an organization and have done plenty to piss off the fanbase....Soldier Field wasn't entirely their fault. There really wasn't an alternative location at the time of the renovation. PSL's.....every team has done that and it's just cost of doing business. You don't like it....don't buy season tickets.

I fully expect the Bears to totally McCaskey this thing, but it hasn't happened yet. So far they are doing everything right and taking advantage of their best opportunity.
