It wasn't. Unless you believe Allen Robinson and Thieving Mack were worth paying.

This tear down needed to happen after the New Orleans 'playoff' game. Does it really matter if the Bears win 4 games or 7 games this upcoming season? They aren't making the playoffs and are not winning the Super Bowl. I'll give Poles the benefit of the doubt and see what the team looks like in 2023.

And Nas is right. Most, if not all of this, depends on Fields anyway.

We'll see how smart Poles is when Getsy debuts his offense. If he takes advantage of Fields strengths and prevents him from repeating the dumb mistakes he made last year, I'm beginning to think this team can win between 7 and 10 games. A lot depends on the coaching, though. Did Poles make the right hires? We'll see.

It's clear that the defensive line sucks, though--with or without Goldman.

All the moves that were made tell me that the Bears are going to test how much fans really want them to run the football.

I don't have an issue with the line if Quinn plays.

The Bears absolutely have to run the football because Fields gives them a major advantage in this regard. Because opposing defenses have to guard against the possibility of him running, he creates extra space for running backs to pop big gains. I believe the team averaged a full yard/carry more with him at QB last year than it did with Foles or Dalton under center. There were a lot more explosive running plays with Fields running the offense, too. That wasn't an accident.

One of the few things the Bears did fairly well last year was run the ball. Which shows just how bad Nagy was and/or how checked out the guys were.

And yet Montgomery averaged only 3.8 yards per carry.

Because he doesn't have any vision. He runs hard into a pile of players. I think Herbert is perfect for this new system.

Because they ran him out of the shotgun quite a bit and defenses saw it coming. I believe Montgomery was close to the bottom of the league last year in terms of yards gained before initial contact.

 Yup. It was painfully obvious just on TV most of the time a run play was called. Nagy seemed to do this pretty often on 3rd & 6.

I do agree with Nas, though, that Montgomery lacks Herbert's vision.

Montgomery often seems to run towards contact rather than away from it.

To see what you have in Fields you have to have pieces. That is why the plan is incoherent - we're not going to see what Fields can do if he's throwing to free agent level receivers and playing behind a line that provides Uvalde-level protection. Give him some weapons and then let's see what we have.

I don't think this is necessarily true.

This thread does a somewhat decent job of explaining why:

Didn't Fields get hurt running the football last year and people want the Bears to run him more this season?

Quantity of runs wasn't the problem. Refusal to slide, imbecilic spin moves, and general lack of awareness were the problem. Good coaching can help with all of these issues.

70-80% of Fields runs should go to the outside where there are easy yards to pick up and he can scoot out of bounds without being touched.

Running in the middle of the Field is where the injuries will occur unless Fields learns how to be more decisive in taking off and slide at the end of plays.

Agreed.

It would also be nice if the refs threw a flag once in a while when he is hit late.

Yes, that was a huge issue last year. His teammates need to force the refs to make those calls by standing up for him.

Rough night for Poles draft picks in Green Bay.

Kyler "Twinkle Toes" Gordon has looked inept so far this season.

Brisker looked lost at times.

Braxton Jones shouldn't be starting at LT.

The fact that i haven't heard Braxton Jones' name mentioned whatsoever bodes very well. Maybe they really did get something worthwhile in the 5th round.

He hasn't been very good so far and needs to step up his game quite a bit. Reiff must suck if Jones is better than he is.

Olin keeps alluding to the fact that Reiff cannot play LT anymore due to his injury history, he may still be able to play RT.

They are obviously taking a long look at Jones, likely want to do the same with Jenkins and Leatherwood once he is healthy, if any of them can play it takes at least one position off the very long list of needs on offense.

Poles knew he had little to work with on the offensive side of the ball, but disturbingly they are rapidly discovering that Kmet is at best a back up TE, Mooney is a decent #2 or #3, but will never be a #1 WR, and that Fields continues to miss easy reads.

Next years offseason is way more interesting than the rest of this season, Poles will be in position to reshape the entire roster, but this year is a pre-planned tank job.

It would have been nice if he started to re-shape the roster this year, as the notion of tanking in the NFL is absurd....

I will say the only time I would tank in the NFL if you have a month to go in the regular season, you have a legit shot at the #1 pick and their is a can't miss Peyton Manning QB prospect available.

I like what I see. A complete rebuilding under a head coach who stresses responsibility for showing up for work and doing your job. Against two quality play-off teams, the Bears are 1-1 and were in the second game and played against a 4 time MVP quarterback. A young team which doesn't have any stars on it except possibly on defense, held its own against two teams who have pro bowlers at man positions. I look at that and say, lets see what happens going forward. They got a taste of eating shit. See how they liked that taste and what they do about it going forward(including the coaches).
