If the Cubs were serious about winning they would put together whatever it takes to get Soto, a guy who is having a "down" year, and is going to finish in the top 5 of MVP voting.

But the Cubs aren't serious about winning, thus they won't trade for him, but moreso, Soto wouldn't sign here long term for the same reason he won't sign long term in Washington, the Cubs are not serious about winning.

Id rather just sign him to a massive deal and not lose the few prospects we currently have.

They don't have the minor league assets to get him. Not a single prospect in MLB top 25, Brennan Davis is 27 and sinking fast, with his fucked up back. Pete Crow Armstrong might be top 25 in the next rankings but still not enough. They had a chance to add to 20-30ish bat in the draft(Brooks Lee) but they opted to draft a pitcher with a near 5 ERA in college.

I don't think you can trade for him without an agreement that he will sign long term. If Boras is set on taking him to free agency, which is his standard practice, the return in a trade goes down. Maybe the Yankees or Dodgers could take such a risk and they'd probably end up being able to sign him. The Cubs aren't likely doing that.

I don't know the Cubs prospects very well. I'm sure the Sox could put together a package. But it wouldn't be the castoffs Sox fans are suggesting on message boards. It would have to start with Vaughn and probably Kopech or Cease. Fans always makeup these fantasy trades with guys they don't want. Sheets and Giolito ain't getting you Soto.

White Sox would be much more likely to go after him for a two-year window (and then let him hit FA) as they are in win-now mode. Cubs don't have anything to offer anyway.

Both the Yankees and Dodgers have 6! (each) have six top 100 prospects. Plus the financial war chests..Soto will be a Yankee or Dodger. Full stop. Also the next time a cuck tells you tanking is the only way to win in baseball, tell them to get fucked.

It's funny to watch the losers at Cubs blogs like BleacherNation talk like the Cubs have an actual shot at Soto...they are also big TANK fans over there.

$29-30 million a year for a decade and a half. I'm not sure there is a player worth that.

I would rather my team get two guys for $15-20million each.

Soto's salary would not be a big deal if the Cubs maintained a proper big-market payroll ($200+ million) instead of bottoming out every seven years.

And it might be a simple matter of the stadium. Soto might hit 80 homers there.

paying 500M for one player is a horrible decision. i dont care how rich the owners are. giving out these megacontracts haven't really helped many teams win WS

Not long ago people said the same thing about $100M contracts. The market has changed. He's a $50M a year player.

The Yankees and Dodgers may be waiting to bid on Ohtani. If he stays healthy, he's going to shatter every contract record.

I remember hearing the same thing when Catfish Hunter got true market rate in the middle 1970s.

Just like some were shocked when Jerry paid Jordan's salary in 94.

Uncle Jerry changed the market with Belle too. He's willing to pay for stars.

That might be like the 2nd biggest money FA deal the sox have given out for all time. And it happened 30 years ago essentially.

And it was only done out of spite when the other owners gave up colluding to hold salaries down.
