Precisely. The new owners will want to make $ first, win second. Even Mark Cuban. Do you think he would be doing all the stuff he does for the Mavs if he was losing money on them? Certainly not.

You can't say that for sure. Thats probably going to be the case, but not for sure.

Even so, as guys get older and presumably play worse, they will still be making a boatload of money.

you're assuming the Cubs don't find an AL trading partner for Soriano in the next couple years and eat a bunch of salary. This is more likely than not.

I disagree with you completely on Cuban. But we'll see. The Sox ownership broke even before 2005, for example.

Alfonso Soriano of
8 years/$136M (2007-14)

signed as a free agent 11/06
$8M signing bonus
07:$9M, 08:$13M, 09:$16M, 10-14:$18M annually
full no-trade clause

He'd have to agree to it.

You are obviously not a businessman. Or at least not a very wise one.

Are you calling the Sox businessmen unwise? That's the point I was making...they were breaking even up till 2005, and no one saw that season coming...

WHere do you get this from? I find it hard to believe, and I'm sure bigfan would love to jump in here, that Uncle Jerry was not making money from the White Sox at any point in time.

Frank, I'm not good at looking things up, but it's in a thread on this board, perhaps posted by bigfan himself, that states that the Sox were more or less "breaking even" before the WS in 2005. I'll search for it.

I can't figure out how to post the thread here, but it talks about a friend who was asked to invest with the Sox and was told somewhere along the line that the Sox had broken even over the course of Reinsdorf's group ownership. This person was asked to come on board before the 2005 season.
