ok so i'm confused...about an hour ago i saw the eclipse happening...but now it just looks like a regular full moon...guess i'm drunk (although I I've only had two beers) gotta get up in 4 hours so im out

I was awakened by the light because the moon was so bright last night around 2 am.

The moon didn't wake me up at 2am, but my dogs barking did. I think it was because the room they sleep in was so bright from the moon that it almost seemed like daylight to them. So maybe, the moon did wake me up???

This is a super weird one folks. It could be fucking amazing. It might be nothing. Or something in between. But there's a chance this is a once in a century event. Ready? Here goes...

Back in 1995 this comet exploded.......



Most Meteor showers are caused by the earth sailing thru comet trail debris. Well this one exploded and left a whole lot of debris. It's still concentrated. So on Tuesday at midnight central time, the earth is gonna plow right into this. Or at least it should.

What does it all mean, Darko?

It means we'll see the birth of a new Meteor shower. And this one could be a whopper. We could see anything between 1000 meteors per hour and... nothing.

I'm an avid Meteor shower watcher. Most I've ever seen was maybe 20 an hour. They're always spectacular. But I can't even imagine seeing 1000 in an hour. I've heard of such things. Never thought I'd have a shot at seeing it. If it's even 200 meteors an hour, it would be something you would tell your great grandchildren about. For some of you that might be among way off. For Seacrest that could be Tuesday afternoon.

It's worth trying to see. It could be life changing.

Generally speaking yes. Urban areas will typically only see the brightest meteors. Even a full moon can wash out a majority of meteors. The moon should only be a day past new, so that won't be much of an issue. If you live in the city, and want to participate, I'd seek some darker skies.

So Venus was eclipsed by our moon yesterday. It's not as rare as it sounds. But the moon covered up Venus for 5 or so hours. This was a shot taken as the moon overtook Venus in our night sky...

I'm really surprised by how excited I just got watching the DART asteroid mission while in a group text with my sons. Reminded me of all the museum and planetarium time we spent when they were little.

And laughing at how much we all nerded out watching this.

Just saw that the DART satellite successfully crashed into the asteroid...will be interesting to see whether it caused the desired change in trajectory.

Apparently Jupiter is closer to Earth than it has been for almost 60 years. I was going to try to go down to the shore of Lake Michigan and watch it coming up in the east after dawn. I don't have anything better than binoculars but read that could be good enough.

Also, a decent zoom lens would work. I got the four largest moons of Jupiter with a shitty zoom. The Inebriated Rodent has got a super zoom, if ya see him.

Went down to the lakefront last night. It was pretty obvious where to look. I found my better pair of binoculars and magnification on them is 10 x 42 so I had high hopes. I really couldn’t see any detail. Part of the issue is keeping the stupid things steady. A telescope would likely be better or a stand for the binoculars. I could see it was a planet but none of the details of the rings or anything.

It worked for me. The binoculars are lightweight, though, and sharp. Saw two or three moons and some detail.
