Would have been a disaster before, but the RB room is much better than it has been for the past few years.

Herbert practiced today and is fine.

People that knew anything about oline play all said the same thing about Daniels, he could be effective at center, but would never be a good NFL guard, gets overpowered at the point of attack.

Do have to say that Poles is showing at least some ability in player evaluation.

Poles also signed Michael Schofield who is cooked.

Bringing in a backup guard for the vet minimum is not exactly earth-shattering Bob.

They brought him in and handed him starting RG before he fell on his face. I question the scouting there. This all of course is after he lost Bates to the Bills, then pouted for 3 months and really didn't do anything to address the oline before that.

They needed a body at RG and signed a dude for the vet minimum, they could have thrown a bunch of money at Daniels, but moved on which looks to be a good move.

I know the Debbie Downer bit is kind of your thing Bob, but even you must admit that realizing they needed to move on from Daniels was a good idea, and even you must know that they will have ample amounts of cap room and draft capital to upgrade next year.

Maybe we should get you and Nas to get together and break bread, if nothing else it would be a fascinating case study of the extremes of Bears fandom.

Would love to see Nas pouring you a cup of orange Bears Kool-Aide.

This is the NFL, I don't believe in "tanking" and "throwing seasons away". Also, if Poles didn't botch the Foles situation, he could have used that money to further poison pill the Bates contract not allowing the Bills to match.

So overpay for Bates instead of signing a vet to the league minimum?

I'm going to guess that you struggle in fantasy football as well.

Bates is a solid young guard and you always overpay in FA. My FF record won't be as near as bad as the Bears record.

So you can't even play a good fantasy GM, but you are really sure that Bates was the difference?

Ok Bob.

Thanks for sharing.

Where did I say he was the difference? I just don't think saying "Fuck 2022" and leaving the oline and WR core a disaster for Fields was a good idea.

Jenkins can probably be a solid RG. Bringing in a camp body didn't hurt. I'm more concerned with the Riley Reiff signing. Poles gave him a lot of money to possibly be the backup RT.

I get your point, but using the money on Bates would've been a better investment than giving the roster bonus to Foles and then launching him a few weeks later.

Yeah, but it's a positive sign for the team if Borom can beat Rieff out for the starting position.

I'm skeptical that this will actually happen, but we shall see.

They're not going to play in the final preseason game. We're going to see the starters less than we did last preseason. That concerns me.

Paying Foles and letting him go was a mistake for sure.

But Bob wanted James Daniels to be paid before he jumped on the Bates bandwagon.[/quote]

And when that is considered, far more then the $4M would have been wasted.

Bobby does seem a bit confused here, and we can all quibble about the way the deck chairs are being arranged this year, and while bringing in vets on one-year deals to paper over shortcomings is not preferrable, it is what they have to do this year.

One way to look at is that if you were to overpay for Bates just to fill a need you would be stuck with that contract, you have an average guy you have overpaid which would prohibit you from bringing in an above average or quality guy to fill that slot next year when you have the resources to significantly upgrade.

While Bob's Eeyore like woe is me takes might be a bit gimmicky, he is not wrong when he brings up the point that this will not help Fields develop but given the dearth of resources available to address the numerous gaping holes on the roster it seems they are just trying to patch whatever they can together to get through this year.

You are all anointing Poles as the next great thing just because he isn't Pace. He hasn't proven anything himself...

No one has annointed Ryan Poles. But you have already buried him for sure.

But other then the Foles miscue, he looks pretty astute so far from what we have seen.

Not anointing anyone, simply stated that he did a good job in making a quick decision on Daniels. It was one of many quick calls he had to make when taking over a roster lacking offensive talent across the board.

Way too early to make any decision on him yet, but you are correct in saying that he already looks like and improvement over Pace and Emery which is an incredibly low accomplishment when you look at the team's recent draft history, with only four players left on the roster from the 2015-2019 draft classes.

His handling of Roquan Smith thus far has been masterful as well.

Other than Kyler Gordon/Brisker, and maybe the two kickers, Poles is going to turn the entire roster over by the time the Bears are competitive in 2024 or 25.

I wouldn't be so quick to bet on the 49ers.

The #Bears are waiving WR Dazz Newsome, per source. Speedy sixth-round pick last year now headed for a fresh start.

I'd think he will be on the practice squad if he doesn't get picked up. He can be a 5th WR in the league with maybe another year of work
