I believe the Bears kept 15 draft picks and undrafted players.

Maybe, but I haven't heard that. He must have been really unimpressive if Jenkins went from being cut to taking his position in what seemed one week's time.

Keeping just two TE's seems odd.

Getsy does seem to like using a bigger WR to block the back side in his version of the outside zone offense, one of the more positive scouting takes on N'Keal Harry was that he was big enough to be an effective blocker.

Looks like Cincy grabbed OJ Howard already, he was a dude that looked like a great prospect, the type of guy that Poles has been gambling on, so surprised they did not at least kick the tires on him.

Tonges is a TE/FB.

Howard has been a bust. Maybe his stripes will change as a Bengal, but I doubt it.

This team could use a Jesper Horsted-type figure.

I agree, but the run first approach doesn't lend itself to Horsted, who couldn't block at all.

We're a long way from the 'bookend tackles for a decade' of Borum and Jenkins that Hub described last year.

Courtney Cronin
@CourtneyRCronin
New Bears offensive lineman Alex Leatherwood said he lined up at right tackle during his first practice on Thursday. "I'm open to anything," Leatherwood said when I asked if right tackle is where he's most comfortable/wants to play at.

Hoge and Jahns interview Poles. I am even more lost by Jenks whining yesterday.

His pass blocking tape at RT is terrible, does not get into any type of reasonable pass block set, way too high, reaches with his outside hand as the DE runs past him. The dude has the length to play OT, but unless his footwork and leverage improves, he will be a liability.

He does have the size and length to bury people in the run game, very similar to Jenkins in that he could be a dominating guard, and in the outside zone game a guy with his arm length just has to steer the defensive player, so worth taking a shot at just in case Jenkins mysteriously ends up on the injured list again.

Poles appears to be very meticulous. I don't know if his plan will work, but something is refreshing about the way he's doing things.

I think the idea with Leatherwood is that his talent is 1st round level but his technique is not. Bama didn’t seem to spend a whole lot of time with him burning technique into him -just out talent the guy across from you because it’s the college level. And the Raiders didn’t seem to have a clue at all with how to handle him. I really do think there’s a possibility that this kid sits as a back up with good coaching for a little while he could turn out to be something. I’m still shocked he was cut after just the 1 season. To me, that’s as much an indictment on the coaching/front office as it is the player -especially a guy drafted that high.

I'm sorry you aren't optimistic about your Packers because Rodgers took all of the money and you have a disabled LT.

Isn’t that kinda the Teven Jenkins story with a better pedigree and no injury?

For once Nas and I agree on something. Pace would have traded for Leatherwood when he was going to be let go anyway. Poles was at least savy when they were shopping him and said ‘nah, we’re good’ then snagged him after he was waived.

I still can’t say much about Poles when it comes to talent evaluation, but I will say he doesn’t get ahead of himself and seems to be much more calculated with his moves so far.

It's easier to do when it isn't your guy. McDaniels didn't care what round he was drafted in.

Well, coming out of college I don’t think Jenkins has rough technique -thing with him was not everyone saw him playing at the pro level where he played at the college level. With Leatherwood I think the consensus (iirc) was that he was talented but a bit of a project coming out of college, so people were a little surprised at where he was selected.

I agree with this post on many levels, especially how really talented big kids or just talented in general aren't pushed coming up. Eventually talent equals or is better and you damn well better know how to respond.

From the athletic on ISM....

I don't think the Bears are adding him to be a punt returner. With the Vikings, he was likely a #5 WR. So he had to be able to return punts to stay on the roster.

The punt returner spot is a prime example. For much of training camp, the Vikings gave 23-year-old wideout Ihmir Smith-Marsette chances to stand out in the role. Fumbles and poor decision-making hurt his chances and the front office’s belief that he could be the answer.

They apparently like punt/kick returner types, it gives them someone to run counters off the outside zone game.

The only thing really impressive about him on tape is that he will fearlessly cut back into traffic rather than just head for the sideline, again this is what they are looking for as a part of the offense, of course Velus Jones is likely the top guy to fill this role, at least early on in the year.

You are starting to see more and more tells as to what they see as key cogs in this offense, a big WR that can block the back side, maybe even at least willingly getting in the way of a DE/OLB, a back that can catch the outlet pass and make a guy miss to pick up the few yards available, and a speedy kick returner type WR they can use in the counter game or in the screen game.

He is of course patching it together with whatever he can pick up cheaply, but once he can find actual playmakers to fill those positions it should work well with Fields as it takes advantage of his mobility, but he must identify the mismatches and subtle tells from DB's in order to hit the chunk plays that should open up.
