Wow, Mackey's slummin' it with the Times.

NOW I know why they had to let Feder and Mariotti go. ;)

Mac try not to get into it with Mary Mitchell...I still remember her giving you a hard time (although she didn't hear it) about you saying that you needed to be a "black woman in a wheelchair" to get a job

Does this mean Mac will be on "Around the Horn"?

Why not? He's a writer now (For a major publication. Not the Hillbilly-Times) and he already works for ESPN. That show only lets writers on I think.

I know "Around the Horn" airs at 4pm. Mac has a show to do. I know. But I'm pretty sure they tape that show at Noon. Mac could do it. They could shoot him from the ESPN 1000 studios.

Congrats, Mac. Can you tell them at the ST to take a look at my resume, too, now that I'm an award winning writer?

Wow, from the quick browse I gave it, Mackey seems like quite the wordsmith.

I was HUGEly disappointed that this is online only. WTF is that all about?

Editor's note: Dan McNeil is the host of the popular "Mac, Jurko & Harry, featuring the Gridiron Assassin" show on ESPN-AM (1000) from 2-6 p.m. weekdays. This is the first of at least four columns he'll write for suntimes.com/sports.

I see he is on North's tail again, with this sort of contract length ;)

It would be longer than his stay on that broadcasting abortion at 10:30PM on Sunday Nights.

He's moonlighting, so I won't include North in any comparisons...

He also said he's doing it as 'a favor' to the Sun-Times I believe. He's radio's answer to former NFL safety / current Sun-Times blogger Matt Bowen. ;)

I thought it was a nicely worded piece. Dan put his time into crafting a work that would fit nicely with the regular columns at the Sun Times. The column was not one obviously written by a radio host.

Pierzinski didn't slam the ball back to the mound, he showed it to Cuddyer.

Is there such a thing as an elegent collision?

I think that's an understatement - I think he really did an awesomely costructed piece. I'm just bummed it's online only.

North could never pull off such a fine piece of work, he's have to do it in Crayolas. ;)

North would have to have someone ghost write it for him.

It would be transcribed, and therefore "read" like his speech patterns. Much like dontfademe is...

I know you guys like Mac (personally and professionally), and so do I -- as a radio host. Unfortunately, like his NW Indiana columns, this is a mess from a writing perspective: no flow, no focus, not tight, poor organization, lack of transitions and a lot of phrases that are lame, ill-fitting or crammed in where they neither support nor make a point.

He indeed reads like a radio host who was given a column...or a college kid with a campus column who showed promise but made the big time too soon. That's essentially what happened here, for he would never have this slot on merit -- it's clearly been awarded to draw the listeners of his "popular Mac, Jurko & Harry show on ESPN-AM (1000)".

It's a bit insulting that he cranks out rookie stuff like this and fancies himself a "writer". Mac mocks, lectures and chastises anyone who dares to say that he has an easy job or opines that just anyone can talk sports on the radio (and I'm on his side there -- he has a tough job at which he excels through his talent, experience and dedication), but he shows the same disrespect to writing skills in this pursuit.

Good luck to him, and I can't begrudge a man taking advantage of the opportunities that come his way, but I also can't pretend that he's got the chops just because I enjoy a cozy stool in the Afternoon Saloon.

I love the article, but you're going a little Dennis Miller on us now...

malodorous ??? unkempt ???

Are these words typically spewed at an afternoon saloon? I think not.

Bears in the Norris Division ??? C'mon Mac, for a guy that thinks that hockey is a 'button pusher' on the radio or a garage/cult sport, to reference it in a football article seems a bit misplaced. It's not even a division any more if I'm not mistaken. The only other person I've heard refer to it as the Norris Division is your buddy Chris Berman.

;)

Solid job on today's theme Mr. McNeil. I'm going to have to put my buddies Jim 'n Jack aside when I read your articles. Time to get my former college friends Merriam 'n Webster. Better yet, since it's a web only article, I'll bookmark www.dictionary.com

Mac, this is really surprising coming from you especially since this is a phrase you use often. Thumbs down.

I guess with the double negative, what he's trying to say is:

Activity SHOULD be mistaken for accomplishment.

He'll blame it on the Sun Times editors.

He's very disenfranchised lately. Dan, you've got to do your job a LOT better.

Good thing only 53 people are reading his article online.
