Albertsons owns Jewel-Osco's and Kroger owns Mariano's and Food 4 Less grocery stores in the Chicagoland market... Not to mention these 2 companies own various grocery store chains across the United States as they are the #1(Kroger) and #2(Albertsons) biggest grocery store chains in the country:

The Kroger Co. Family of Stores includes:
Baker’s, City Market, Dillons, Food 4 Less, Foods Co, Fred Meyer, Fry’s, Gerbes, Jay C Food Store, King Soopers, Kroger, Mariano’s, Metro Market, Pay-Less Super Markets, Pick’n Save, QFC, Ralphs, Ruler, Smith’s Food and Drug.

The AlbertsonsCo. Family of Stores includes:
Albertsons, Safeway, Vons, Jewel-Osco, Shaw's, Acme, Tom Thumb, Randalls, United Supermarkets, Pavilions, Star Market, Haggen, Carrs, Kings Food Markets and Balducci’s Food Lovers Market.

I am not sure the government will allow this merger to go through as it very anti competitive and creates more monopoly power in 1 company.. But who knows.. maybe they will be forced to sell some companies like Mariano’s in the Chicago market?

Kroger really did ruin Marianos. Their meat and bakery by us is good everything else is pretty bad or over priced. Jewel has always been okay and expensive but lately it's going to shit. The ones in Darien, Woodridge, and north DG are all better than the one near me.

Fresh Thyme, Standard Market, and Brookhaven get most of my business. I haven't been to Meijer in awhile but went there a lot in the past. Haven't been to the shop and save but heard good things.

This is what the shareholders want. Why should anyone stop them? Don’t like it? Start your own grocery store.

No one actually buys food. It’s the original subscription based service model.

You keep it in a safe deposit box or something?

I sell them at a farmers market and then I buy a $20 burrito.

Byerly's was suppose to open here about 20 years ago but I don't think they ever did which is a shame. They are awesome. I HEB looked okay. Pubix is good. Piggly Wiggly seems hit or miss but there are a few that are good. Jungle Jim's in OH was pretty fantastic.

I can't imagine what could go wrong with 1 or 2 companies setting the price of groceries in nearly every community in America.

People will just stop going there if the company is doing something the consumer doesn’t like.

If it does go through, hopefully they will be forced to sell some of their Illinois locations to either Publix or Wegmans, or less likely HEB.

Your thinking of places like Chicago which has a lot of competition with independent grocers (Tony's, Valli Produce, Cermak Market, Shop & Save, etc...,) and can choose where to go or not. In some states there is not much competition besides the Kroger or Albertsons owned stores which consumers have no choices.

Maybe Bob Mariano buys back his namesake? It was pretty nice store when he owned it prior to getting bought out by Kroger and the subsequent closing of all the independent food stalls and cheapening the brand and product offerings!

I’d be surprised if Publix came into Illinois. I could see Schnucks or Dierbergs from MO moving further north though.

Schnucks seems to be struggling out here. I was surprised to see Albertson's owning Safeway. Safeway, along with Kroger was the big competitor of Albertsons. Out in podunk its real Walmart vs everyone. Takes a bit of a sized town to get something bigger than say a Fareway or one of the small local chains. And a to of towns just have shitting IGA's but those are starting to shut down too.

I could see that as well. That's how Mariano's came in when they were still part of Roundy's, when Dominick's bit the dust.

This will go through with all of the other competition showing up....WalMart, Target smaller companies like Woodmans etc.

For me in my area, I have Super Target, Super WalMart, Woodmans, Marianos, Jewel, Caputos, Meijer and Melrose Market all within 5 minutes. Plus costco. There is plenty of competition in the marketplace.

Plenty where you (and I) live. That’s pretty unfair to those who live a bit further out in the burbs and beyond.

In Lake Zurich there are two full size Jewel's within two blocks of one another at the Intersection of Rand and 22. Thought one of them would've closed by now

Nothing stopping someone from opening up their own grocery store. Shit they'd probably get handed some sweet TIF money out of it.
