Read this novel 20 or 25 years ago and remember it being good but hard for me to imagine what WWI was like. This movie looks intense. I still haven't seen 1917 yet but this appears to be in that same vein but from a German perspective.

I watched the Peter Jackson doc a couple of months ago. That was shocking. I've seen a lot of that footage before but seeing it in quality of modern technology made WW1 seem even more tragic. I thought the the 1917 trailer looked like it would be bad so I haven't gone out of my way to watch yet. It seemed to have a Gallipoli/Saving Private Ryan feel to it with bad vfx...

This looks more interesting than 1917 to me. WW1 movies are hard to watch though...its non-stop misery.

They made it in 1930 and a TV version in 1979. Am I missing other versions?

1917 was a good movie.

One of the best war movies I have ever seen, and enjoyable to see how they pulled off the trenches. Really moving film, too . . . I watched it next to my son, who wasn't much younger than the kids in the film.

I saw 1917 on Friday. It was pretty good. The biggest thing I took from that movie was the very long one shot scenes. That was impressive cinematically. Also good acting as well. I looked at the one kid and I swore I knew him as they were taking off. I IMDb him and he’s King Tommen from Game of Thrones.

I was a little disappointed in both 1917 and They Shall Not Grow Old and I am a fan of war movies. All Quiet is one of my favorite books and I will definitely watch the movie. If you are interested in WWI- listen to Dan Carlin's 5-part podcast on the war. It is spectacular.

Finally got around to watching All Quiet…. Usually for the foreign films I’ll leave the subtitles on but this one I switched to English so I could just watch the movie. Visually this is stunning in my opinion. The story sort of comes secondary but the characters are played well there just isn’t a ton of substance there. Certainly heartbreaking circumstances these guys had to endure. A lot of pretty graphic violence as you would guess with a film like this. I suspect it may be up for foreign film awards at the Oscars. I wouldn’t really recommend it unless you were mesmerized by the trailer like I was. Was one of the prettiest movies I’d watched in some time.

I watched about 90 minutes of the movie last night. It seemed more like the reenactment of a soldier's diary than a movie.

Almost, but I kept waiting on any kind of story. But with the look of the movie it was different in a good way.

Anytime I have to read a movie, it's inevitable. Like that Kray brothers movie. It was good but I had to make 3 trips at it.

As I mentioned above you just switch the language to English and they dub the words for you. Generally I like to listen to the original dialogue and read the text but I really wanted to take in the visuals and not be bothered with the reading so much.

i too switched to the English translation and in this movie it really wasn't a distraction. I thought this movie was very good. I was impressed with some of the shots in the trenches, WWI was pretty fucked up.

I might have to give this another go. Watched half of it and then didn't get back to it for like a week or two and completely forgot who was who and what had happened other than it was WW1.

I finally saw it last night and liked it. Why did they use trench warfare in WW1? What was the reasoning behind it?
