What appetizers do you serve on thanksgiving? Looking for some ideas. Nothing too crazy since I don't want people filling up before dinner even starts.

Was thinking a chacutcheri (sp) board and then one other app.

I think we threw out a plate of crackers with pub cheese or a cheese ball...I don't remember now...it's been a few years since we hosted.

When we are at my in-laws, there are no appetizers...they also eat dinner at like 1 in the afternoon which is mind numbing.

Meat, cheese and crackers is pretty easy. I have a recipe for a dip that has shredded chicken, cream cheese, spicy peppers and cheese melted on top that you eat with chips or crackers that is really good as well.

thanksgiving doesn't really need apps

maybe a bowl of chips or pretzels

We do a buffalo chicken dip in a mini crockpot: shredded chicken, cream cheese, mozzarella cheese, blue cheese (or ranch), and your choice of buffalo sauce. We also have meatballs in the chili sauce/cranberry sauce, other chips/dips, and veggies.

One of my cousins went vegan one year and she brought what appeared to be a platter of those little hot dogs in puff pastry, which I love. I excitedly exclaimed, "Little hot dogs!" as I grabbed a couple. Her husband already had one in his mouth and he mumbled, "These aren't that." They were fucking carrots shaped to look like little hot dogs. The horror.

We did this for a party recently. Big hit. It's an app and a dessert at the same time so people have it all day.

My only advice would be to up the level of cinnamon.

I'm pretty sure that's a violation of the Geneva Conventions.

There's a joke about making sure you have an outlet for your crock pot teed up, but I can't seem to quite put my finger on it...

I usually put out 1. or 2 of these

charcuterie board
crackers/chips and dip - pimento cheese, French onion, sausage and cheese, beer cheese, spinach, dill, cowboy caviar whatever
cream cheese salsa avocado cheese olive rollups
buffalo chicken rollups
bacon wrapped dates
pigs in a blanket
mini eggrolls or lumpia
bbq meat balls

I'm afraid to ask, but what is "cowboy caviar"?

It's a little more summery but it makes a ton and thanksgiving is a big crowd for us so everything is made in bulk.

Interesting.

As an aside...why is it every recipe I come across online now includes a wordy narrative I don't care about. Just give me the damn recipe card...I don't care that the royal you decided to just whip this together after you made lemon bars and your signature carrot cake or whatever the fuck. Do all of these idiots have to pretend they're Ina Garten on the fucking Food Network or something?

That sounds like a pre-dinner bowel cleanse.

Which is not to say it wouldn’t be delicious, but I think you start doing the math on guests per bathroom when you decide to make that.

One of my older cousins has been hosting our family's Thanksgiving for about 25 people for a couple of decades and pretty much sticks to what my aunt used to do when she was still alive. A cold sour cream-based dip of some sort, a hot dip, various chips and crackers, often some cut up roasted Italian sausage and peppers or something else she wants to try making. Nothing too heavy or spicy. Light appetizers at 3, dinner at 5, so everybody has either already had breakfast at home or they went to their in-laws for lunch and wander in around 4:30.

2.5 lbs of bacon nicely cooked up on a grill. That's my go-to for any event. It's an appetizer and a dessert.

Whatever it is, be sure to add a hersheys kiss. Except with that Buffalo chicken dip. Enough of those to go around without adding…to the…pot.

My family would always eat before noon so we could watch most of the first football game. Guess I've always been one to do that stuff earlier rather than later.

I don't believe that I've ever seen appetizers at any Thanksgiving dinner. But that's due to them all starting at 4:30-5:00(when dinner's ready) with most not coming before that unless they were coming to help the host.

My wife tried to pull a fast one on me. She makes a pretty mean pepperoni stuffed pizza. One time she makes it and it tastes off. Not as good as normal. After a game of 20 questions, she coughs up that she put turkey pepperoni in the pizza instead of real pepperoni. She hasn't made that mistake again. :D

It's been 10 years since we did a Thanksgiving with family (3 years in Scotland and now we go to Mexico) but I'd say beer, wine and whisky do nicely as an appetizer, especially if you have "interesting" family.

The appetizer is whatever you eat the night before or breakfast.

 I stand corrected. My dad and granddads called their appetizers highballs.
