I think we threw out a plate of crackers with pub cheese or a cheese ball...I don't remember now...it's been a few years since we hosted.

When we are at my in-laws, there are no appetizers...they also eat dinner at like 1 in the afternoon which is mind numbing.

My family would always eat before noon so we could watch most of the first football game. Guess I've always been one to do that stuff earlier rather than later.

Ugh. At a bare minimum, when we are at the in-laws, dinner starts at halftime of the Lions game, and can be strategically finished by the time they kick to start the second half...or as has been the case when the Bears were playing, I sit at the "kids" table and watch the game on my phone...

Gravlax with onions and capers. Dad has a hard-boiled egg with his, but that's not my thing.
Enjoy with a vodka tonic. Pour a 2nd vodka tonic after the Lions fall behind 2 scores. Happy Thanksgiving!

I just remembered that I'm teaching my wife how to make gumbo. So my appetizers that day will be the two beers it takes me to make the roux.

I hate hate hate hate (Spaulding :D ) turkey.

It’s the worst when it’s baked with the usual boring shit. When my dad would fry turkeys with Cajun seasoning it was phenomenal.

That's why I bowl a tournament first. An excuse for AM High Lifes and starting a buzz to get through the day dealing with family.

I agree with this. Get your fat asses to the gym before Thursday so you can sleep in and go to Denny’s for breakfast like I plan to. Besides a Turkey trot is a 5k? That’s not a workout. It’s a warm up.

The annual Turkey Bowl we used to play at Rainbow Beach Park was the only healthy thing I did on Thanksgivings.

15-17 minutes? It's a good warm-up on a cool day. Yeah, not a workout.

Dennys?!?

Fuck that. My grandmother knew that I hated turkey and added ham for me. The ham was always the first thing to go.

Followed by the gravy.

5K is 3.2 god loving american miles. If you are doing that in 15 minutes, much respect.

That was a good time for varsity cross country. But only the runners & coaches cared.

Mariano's actually does an an excellent charcuterie - unique cheeses and a bit of dried fruit and pecans. Supplement with some nice sliced meats and you're in business.

Exactly.....for old fat guys like me, I'm thrilled to crack 30 minutes.
Turkey Trot is a glorious way to get the day started.

Is that a carryover tradition from the bar hopping days of Black Wednesday?

Interesting.

As an aside...why is it every recipe I come across online now includes a wordy narrative I don't care about. Just give me the damn recipe card...I don't care that the royal you decided to just whip this together after you made lemon bars and your signature carrot cake or whatever the fuck. Do all of these idiots have to pretend they're Ina Garten on the fucking Food Network or something?

The recipe thing is totally out of control. The part you want is buried under layers of nonsense. It's part and parcel of our decadent culture. You can't just make and eat food, you need to be told a story about it as well.

It wasn't that long ago that restaurant menus had just the food and the prices listed. Now we have to be told a story about the restaurant, told a story about the food's origin, and be introduced to food philosophy of the owner/chef.

Go get some cranberry cinnamon goat's milk cheese from costco and some crackers, and you're set.

I like the classic chicken Buffalo dip made with Frank's Red Hot... has anyone tried it with sriracha instead?

I've made cranberry w/goat cheese crostini's before. A little more work than the goat cheese with all the shit already in it. Most of the time when I host everyone shows up right before dinner, helps clean up then gets out. Every couple of years someone will fuck things up and come over early and I feel like I should have something to snack on.
