The idea of an emergency fund is to forego any risk of the investment decreasing in value with the understanding that the returns will be pitiful. The return on the emergency fund is to not have to borrow money at high rates to fix the emergency. I run mine through a CD ladder. Not great returns but not zero either.

I do sympathize with the frustration of watching the purchasing power of the cash melt away in this high inflationary environment.

Yeah, I maxed that out back in October. Guess the site was crashing right before the deadline. It's still at 6% right now. When we hit Jan 1, I feel better about putting money there than in my Roth.

You can buy brokered bank CD's (through your brokerage) which offer higher rates than going directly to the bank. Many people don't know about this and its 100% the same FDIC insured up to $250k CDs from the partner banks. Or look into Treasuries bought through a brokerage which are also 100% safe.

The current rates on the 1yr brokered CDS from various banks is ranging from 4.0 to 4.75 yld. depending on the partner bank as of 11/20/22.
