Does Jose Abreu have a learning disability that he can't comfortably speak English after 8 plus years?

I can't speak English after over 40 years. I don't have a 2nd language to fall back on.

He's probably just more comfortable speaking Spanish in front of reporters, so nothing he says gets misconstrued by the press.

Now we have 2/3 of an outfield to fill and uncertainty at 1st. Along with the pressure on Vaughn.

He got 3 years/$59 million from the Astros. Would you be willing to give him that contract? I know I wouldn't.

How much money did Keuchel and Grandal sign for?

Too much. They were bad contracts, and that's exactly what I'm afraid would become of a three year Jose Abreu deal.

If (& I realize it’s a big if) they fill the holes in the OF and 2nd base, then I have no problem with letting Abreu walk. He was a great player for the Sox but the needs elsewhere were much greater than at 1st. Vaughn will be fine there and won’t be the reason they disappoint next season.

doubling down is an interesting strategy

we made bad signings before...lets keep doing it !

How would it be doubling down? MVP Abreu has actually been good. Those guys suck. Over the past 3 years, what Sox hitter has been better? Timothy Devon Anderson Jr? The Sox allowed arguably their best hitter and 3rd best pitcher to go to their stiffest playoff competition. Don't worry; Grandal will still be in the lineup and crawling around the bases.

That is an awful contract for the Astros.

Not really, they aren't worried about 39 million dollars.

They will get one good year from Abreu and one mediocre one, that final year will be terrible.

That's not really a bad deal for Abrue, maybe you have to eat the last year..still...he will DH that last two years.

Wish the Cubs were on that, I'm not ready to hand the job to Mervis without competition..I've seen too many LaHairs

You could be right, but didn't Sox fans complain about his team friendly deal 3 years ago for the same reason?

1st base-DH is the easiest slot to fill, I wouldn't worry about losing Abreu at his age.

That's because you've been a Sox fan your entire life. They've kept a great 1st baseman and a stud starting pitcher.

And opened a slot in LF.

Astros can absorb his dwindling power much easier than the Sox could.

I think 19 per year for what he is going to provide will seem like a luxury.

So the Sox will have to absorb a guy at first who has never hit more than 17.

1. He's not even arbitration eligible yet, so yes, they can absorb it and, in theory, reallocate the 19 million difference.

2. Vaughn is scratching the surface and performed well in light of everything the Sox have done to destroy his development

3. I expect Vaughn to be no less than a mid 20s HR player as a first baseman and I would bet he outhomers Jose next year.

by the way, their slugging was nearly identical

Its a sad situation to have other bad contracts forcing the Sox not to sign Abreu, but Vaughn will outperform him in the next three years. Jose will probably win a world series to top off his career, so I am happy for him

Jose will have 45 doubles next year playing in Houston. That's pretty good, especially considering the fact that there will be decent baserunners on the paths when he's at the plate. But I guess that does not help the Sox at all.

Vaughn sucked the last two months....maybe he's a different hitter when playing a position he can actually handle. But he's only played 40 games in the bigs at first base....another 50 as DH, I think. Seemed to lack oppo power last year.

Risky move, but we knew the Sox were gonna do this.

Jose was the least of the Sox problems....of all the ways they have wasted money, keeping Abreu would have been fine. He's still very productive.

The Indians offered Abreu a 3 year deal too. I'm not sure why good teams coveted Abreu if he's washed up
