I had a friend in West Dundee that us hosted maybe a decade ago. He had this Irish American neighbor who fashioned himself as America’s biggest soccer fan. I met the guy after he had just attended a U.S. Mexico match at Soldier Field. The dude was dressed like Uncle Sam with war paint and all.

So the guy tells me that at least 90% of the fans were cheering for Mexico, and we need more soccer fans to counter that. I laughed. No thanks. Go Cubs Go.

That could have been the Gold Cup 2007 and I was there and I probably saw the guy. And that’s true. Most of the fans were rooting for Mexico, and almost 80% of all the fans were either Polish or Mexican.

bankroll at $3.6k and once again, almost impossible to take any underdog here. eventually, it's likely to happen. just not ready to play any longshot later today.

france at -320 to win in regular time while england -190 to win in regular time. france is a bit steep for me, poland with a world-class GK. going to play england for $400.

england comes through and the bankroll is at $4k. i said that there's no way japan was able to bottle and drink when needed - the elixir to losing at the half and having 30% possession, then storming back to win on 2 counter-attacks.

japan plays as a unit, a good unit. to me, croatia won't force the issue, like a germany or spain. i don't see it happening again. odd that the media says croatia is a favorite, when they are now even-money in regular time. at even money, i'm taking the croatians to win for $700. i'll wait on this result before playing brazil x s. korea.

Croatia vying with Germany to be the team you don't want to face with penalty kicks.

It strange that they will play on Friday while France/England, who played yesterday, will play Saturday.

expected a bit more from croatia. GK was very good with the spot kicks, got help from poor japanese kicks. to me, croatia today confirmed they are nowhere near the same quality from previous times. i felt they were better than japan over the 90, but, something missing. at times, they were selfish when they need to share more of the ball, at other times, they weren't selfish enough and made an extra pass when a shooting chance was on. a few good deliveries in the box, low-quality CFs in petkovic and budimir made a hash of them. modric can barely go 90 mins and i'm looking to go against them in their next match. modric with a sweet connection that forced a very good save - still has so much class. was the best chance for a 2-1 croatia win in regular time.

i'm going to make a small play on s. korea, +1150 to win in regular time. $100 and we'll look to tomorrow for better results.

Spain seems lethargic. Morocco has parked the bus and Spain seems content to pass back and forth with no movement into the box, like they already have the lead.

enjoying most of the commentary. ian darke, even on his worst day is better than most american commentators doing intl. football. i do take exception with his and the fox network rainbows, ribbons and lollipops comment about all of africa and the 'arab world' cheering for morocco. no doubt, the 'arab world' is fanatically cheering them on, despite moroccan arabic is much different from the arabic spoken in palestine, syria or iraq. i doubt that sub-sahara africa is cheering them on. the ghanians and nigerians i work with don't consider arab n. africans as 'africans'. of course, if you told them that a morocco quarter-final appearance would allow 1 more african nation into the world cup, yes, they'd cheer them on. that argument is moot because the world cup will expand next tournament.

no plays today, not a big fan of the swiss, but i hope they knock out portugal. bankroll at $3.1k.

Ian Darke and Landon have been pretty great to listen to, and yes that’s a testament to how world class Darke is. He’s the English Al Michaels, or Vin Scully.

I feel like the longer this Brazil/Croatia match stays scoreless to more likely Croatia is going to win. It's like Croatia are grinding Brazil down.

Some of these Croatian women. They might have the most babes as a percentage of their crowd.
