I think that's the most the Rays have ever spent on a free agent.

Wonder if Rodon to Houston could happen. Haven't seen it rumored anywhere though he supposedly bought a home in Texas.

Yeah no doubt. He will be 40 when this deal ends. I have not seen if there are any player opt outs in the deal.

Where contracts are headed, that $300M doesn't seem awful. It's probably backloaded.

The money is not bad, but 11 years. Turner is a great player, but what is he going to look like at 35+?

What are you thinking if you're representing Ohtani or Soto?

Before today I was thinking 7/400 for Ohtani. Now it's probably 9/500.

Why wouldn't Ohtani get a $55M a year deal? An 80 year old Verlander and Scherzer signed $45M a year deals.

Verlander and Sherzer are proven horses, still kicking ass at late 30s.. extremely rare, Very doubtful ohtani can replicate that.

He's by far the best/most valuable player in baseball and he is a free agent next year. No one should have a higher salary than him for at least the next 5 years.

Ohtani can easily get the 27M AAV of Turner to be a hitter, and whatever AAV Rodon gets (probably another 28M) to be a pitcher. That's $55M total AAV. He will not get only 6 years like Rodon, but he will not get 11-13 years like Turner, Harper, and Trout (12/426 back in 2019). So split the difference and that's 9.

9/495. And that's without a bidding war.

The Verlander money is insane; that’s more a function of Cohen not giving a shit about money than actual value.

There’s got to be some economic limit to paying these guys. I appreciate that Ohtani is good; is he $50m+ good? At some point teams have to see a return on these salaries and not just dump cash for the sake of doing it (unless again, you’re Steve Cohen and you want to be a cool billionaire).

Texas Rangers spend ½ a billion last year to end up with 94 losses. Then take a huge gamble on fragile Jacob deGrom. Interesting where they spend next.

there is an interesting sub category developing of short years but very high per year.

That is actually favorable to both owners and players.

This is one area where soccer (outside the US) is arguably better than baseball. If a European player's contract expires June 30, then teams are free to make FA offers to him starting January 1, to be effective July 1.

Can you imagine teams being allowed to bid on FAs effective at the conclusion of the All Star Game, while they are still playing for competitors? Holy shit, it would be incredible.
