What do you mean by "sex education"? Do you mean biology, what a fallopian tube is, etc? Or do you mean blowjob instructions?

Sorry, but I'm not sure I want my sex education to come from the older brother of a kid in the neighborhood.

Open lines of communication with your kids is not helicopter parenting.

I'm going to agree with Nardi on this one. I didn't talk to my older son about masturbating or try to scare him with the Bible. Based on the internet search history on the living room television, I'm confident he figured it out on his own. Just like I did. We also have an open line of communication and talk about most things. I don't plan on having that conversation with 5 year old Lil Nas either.

This is what I said which you called helicopter parenting.

Quote:
Most kids are going to learn about things like this whether schools mention it or not at around the same age. It's not like we can say "Hey, let's not tell kids about anything" and they won't learn about it until they are in their 20s.

It's a tough thing to think about as a parent but I have a young kid who is already learning all the swear words because people they know have older brothers. While it's not the exact same thing as swear words the same thing will happen with any information you hide.

Much of my sex education came from my girlfriends from 8th through 12th grades. It really wasn't such a bad way to go. I won't handle things that way, but I kind of get what Nardi is saying.

I think sex education in schools should be taught. I don't have an issue with the link you posted and the subjects they discuss.

I do not think it should be taught in that way.

I think it would be a valid thing to mention in a sex ed class in middle school. There is no good answer on how "old" you should be to learn about things like that but I'd rather it happens with a solid plan from experts rather than from the most knowledgeable older kid about these subjects.

Right because peers don't hold sway over authority figures. What fucking Utopia do you live in?

We had some sex education in my public junior high school and Catholic high school. I was so freaked out about hearing that stuff from a teacher that I tuned out as much as possible. Most of my friends had the same reaction.

I would suspect that a lot of kids are getting their sex education from the internet and their friends today. There was a big internet porn scandal at my son's elementary school last year because a bunch of 6th graders were visiting porn sites on the bus ride home and sharing their "findings" with the younger kids.

My school experience was mostly what you describe, though the Catholic high school I attended did some creepier stuff that was pretty mortifying. My teachers in junior high and high school used props, and that was rather traumatizing.

Much of the paranoia expressed on this board is a function of our decaying social institutions. Oddly enough, the people here who are most supportive of dismantling the public sphere seem most sensitive to the negative impact of dismantling the public sphere.

It’s maybe out of the ordinary, but the kids I grew up with never seemed as traumatized as many here are about sex ed or the so called gay agenda. Oddly my private school never talked about it, my dad did. Having said that I think the class would have bored the hell out of me, especially when the talk of seventh grade private school was kids spiking up on dog food.

It certainly is a conundrum. It would be nice if institutions would stay in their own lane.

It answered your question. Yes if they only discuss the biological and scientific parts it's fine. If they have to discuss identity and anal then I think they should also have to discuss God and morality and I don't think that would fly in the public school system. It shouldn't be binary. Most things aren't no matter how badly you want them to be. And if you make it binary in that extreme I'd say no sex ed shouldn't be taught then. Any parent that wants to protect their child would agree. I look at that curriculum and I think what people passed that and we are a totally corrupt and morally bankrupt society.

Ok. You answered it but then you put in so many disclaimers you just made it even less clear.

To me, there are two reasons to have it.
1) Knowledge of reproduction. However, does that really matter that much? They'll figure out one day how to have kids no matter what. It's not like anyone 100 years ago was like "I wanted to have kids but I just didn't know what to do!".
2) Safety. You want them to know the downsides and potential problems. STD's. Unwanted pregnancies. Legal issues involved. You can't just act like only one type of activity exists and successfully discuss those things. You don't have to glorify anything or put in anything that does anything more than define things and explain that doing those things can still have negative consequences.

Now again, maybe you think it's only parents who should discuss any of that stuff. Opt your kid out. Teach them yourself and ignore completely all the other things if you want. However, you seem to think it should be taught in schools so that's not the issue here.

I am not current on my sex education reading, but is there any evidence that sex ed programs and other initiatives like condom distribution programs are actually effective in promoting responsible behavior? Last time I checked into this, which was several years ago, the data suggested that these programs have little impact on adolescent behavior.

I just didn't want to hear about sex from my teachers, who I thought were pretty weird to begin with. Most of my friends felt the same way. Things get awfully uncomfortable when your homeroom teacher is putting a condom on a banana.

Which seems to be the experience of virtually everyone here, but which hasn’t stopped the paranoia and hyperbole.

I blame Chicago’s shitty sports. There is no joy in Mudville for MANY I guess.

It doesn't really matter if things work or not in school. It just has to make people think it work.

Sex ed in school should probably be more of a bio type discussion on reproduction and physical development. Some type of discussion on STDs is probably important at an older age. Maybe that’s where the groomers can find a hook to launch seminars on gay sex.

If the instructor feels compelled to bring in props, they’re doing it wrong.

My school experience was mostly what you describe, though the Catholic high school I attended did some creepier stuff that was pretty mortifying. My teachers in junior high and high school used props, and that was rather traumatizing.

I just didn't want to hear about sex from my teachers, who I thought were pretty weird to begin with. Most of my friends felt the same way. Things get awfully uncomfortable when your homeroom teacher is putting a condom on a banana.

I don't believe that there are many teachers that actually want to discuss the subject anyway.

Yeah, kids are much more likely to be influenced by peers and the internet in this regard than they are by Mr. Pocketpinball, which was a nickname one of my friends gave to a junior high social studies teacher because...well...you know.

I totally agree. Their obvious discomfort combined with the kids' discomfort is a recipe for education FAIL.

Condom use is up, kids are waiting longer to have sex, and birth rates have declined. I'm not sure if sex ed is working, but something is.

Just like trigonometry and chemistry if you didn’t have a great interest in those core classes.

Oddly enough I don’t think my teachers in those classes had much more daily interest in the classes either. Public or private school.

The guy referenced to start this thread is - in his own words - bringing people into children’s classrooms with dildos & butt plugs, teaching queer sex and hosting conversations on the merits of lube v. spit. To children.

MANY would rather disagree with people who find this disgusting (because reasons) than address the actual groomer in the room.
